The AW1 is the wall-mounted model in the A-Line range of the British maker Spendor Audio Systems. Spendor lists it with its theatre products next to the AC1 and AC2 centre speakers, and the maker calls it a compact design whose cabinet fits onto a wall with the bracket that comes in the box. It is designed and made in the UK, and the model was carried over into the mark 2 A-Line range published in February 2025 with an unchanged specification.
Key specs that matter
The AW1 is a two-way sealed cabinet. A 15 cm mid-bass unit with an EP77 polymer cone of Spendor's own design is paired with a 22 mm polyamide dome tweeter, crossing over at 4.2 kHz. The in-room response is 55 Hz to 25 kHz, sensitivity is 84 dB for 1 watt at 1 metre, and the nominal impedance is 8 ohm, dipping to a minimum of 6.6 ohm. Power handling is 100 watts of unclipped programme. The enclosure is 305 mm tall, 165 mm wide and 186 mm deep, the wall bracket adds another 75 mm of depth, and the net weight is 5 kg. Connection is by a single pair of recessed precision binding posts.
Engineering and use context
Its specification matches the first-generation A1 shelf speaker in response, sensitivity, impedance and crossover point, so the AW1 is in effect the same acoustic platform adapted for wall mounting. The supplied bracket allows 18 degrees of tilt up or down and 180 degrees of swivel, which lets the owner aim the drivers toward the seating position from a high or side wall location. With no port, the sealed box keeps its bass behaviour predictable when the rear panel sits close to the wall. Spendor states that the AW1 can take front left, centre or right duties as well as surround work, so a whole multichannel front stage can be built from the same model. The accessory list includes a magnetic grille, and the four finishes are black oak, oak, walnut and satin white.
Pairing
The recommended amplifier range is 25 to 100 watts per channel, which covers the output of most AV receivers, and the high minimum impedance keeps the load simple for multichannel amplifiers driving several speakers at once. Spendor names the A1, A2, Classic 4/5 and Classic 3/1 stereo speakers and any of its centre channel models as matching partners for the AW1 in a surround system.
Alternatives
The Spendor A1.2 is the brand's compact shelf mount model built around the same EP77 bass/mid cone and polyamide dome, placed on a shelf or stand instead of a wall bracket.
