The Comète Ez is the bigger stand-mount in the Esprit Ez range from Triangle, the French manufacturer founded in 1980 in Soissons. The Ez generation of the Esprit line introduced a revised midrange driver derived from the Magellan flagship project, an updated horn-loaded tweeter and fibreglass bass units with a new construction, and the Comète is designed to give floorstander-like bass from a stand-mounted cabinet.
Key specs that matter
Two drivers share a front-ported reflex cabinet, a 25 mm titanium dome horn tweeter and a 165 mm mid/woofer whose cone is natural cellulose pulp held by a small-pleat surround. The crossover frequency is 3500 Hz. Response runs from 49 Hz to 22 kHz (+/-3 dB), sensitivity is 89 dB/W/m, nominal impedance is 8 ohms and minimum impedance is 4.2 ohms. Recommended amplifier power is 25 W to 130 W, with 80 W power handling. The cabinet measures 200 x 400 x 324 mm in width, height and depth, for a net weight of 9.3 kg.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter combines a titanium dome with a compression chamber and horn, a Triangle signature that raises efficiency, lowers distortion and controls directivity. The mid/woofer cone is white 100% natural cellulose, and its small-pleat surround enlarges the effective radiating area compared with a conventional roll surround of the same frame size. The profile of the cone, the shape of the suspension and the dust cap were taken from work on the Magellan range. The crossover uses copper coils and metallised polypropylene capacitors, and internal wiring is Triangle's own OFC cable. The front-mounted port leaves the rear free, which allows closer placement to a back wall than a rear-ported speaker. The terminal plate is brushed aluminium, exclusive to the Esprit Ez series. A magnetic grille and rubber feet are supplied, and Triangle offers the S02 stand, designed for this series, to put the tweeter at seated ear height.
Pairing
Triangle recommends the Comète Ez for rooms of 15 to 30 m2. The impedance curve does not demand an unusually heavy-duty amplifier, so an integrated model with output inside Triangle's recommended range suits the Comète, while Triangle states that its speakers never fall below 3 ohms. The Voce Ez centre uses the same cellulose drivers for a matched surround layout, and the Titus Ez works as a smaller rear speaker.
Alternatives
Triangle's Titus Ez is the smaller two-way stand-mount of the same Esprit Ez series.
