The Signature Theta is the compact two-way speaker for stands in the Signature series from Triangle, designed and built by Triangle in its own Soissons facility in France. Its cabinets are derived from the high-density enclosures of the Magellan range and finished in a high-gloss coat. The floorstanding Signature Delta, aimed at rooms of 15 to 50 m2, and Signature Alpha, meant for spaces above 30 m2, complete the series, and the Theta sells for USD 2,400 in the US.

Key specs that matter

A 25 mm titanium dome tweeter loaded by a horn sits above a 16.5 cm mid-woofer, whose treated paper diaphragm is held by a small pleated surround, and the crossover hands over at 2,700 Hz. Triangle quotes a sensitivity of 90 dB at 1 W and 1 m and a lower limit of 45 Hz at -3 dB. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 3.4 ohm, continuous power handling is 90 W and Triangle advises amplification of 25 to 130 W into 8 ohm. Each speaker is 233 mm wide, 465 mm high and 372 mm deep and weighs 11.5 kg net, or 15.6 kg packed.

Engineering and use context

The enclosure walls are laminated from seven high-density fibreboard layers, adding up to 21 mm, a build intended to damp panel vibration. The gloss surface is produced with seven or ten coats of paint for a piano lacquer effect, with Black, White, Mahogany and Golden Oak on the colour list. Bass loading is by a reflex duct that vents through the baffle facing the listener. With these walls a Theta weighs nearly twice as much as the 6.3 kg Borea BR03, which uses drivers of similar size. The mid-woofer also has a phase plug and a double magnet motor. Triangle aims the Theta at medium rooms between 15 and 30 m2 and also proposes it as a rear channel in a high-end home cinema.

Pairing

The good sensitivity means modest amplifiers at the lower end of the recommended range can drive the pair, while the impedance minimum, less than half the nominal rating, points to an amplifier that can supply current. At the other end, the top of the recommended range exceeds the continuous handling, so a larger amplifier should be run with restraint at high levels, and Triangle lists its S04 40th and S05 models as the matching stands.
