The Solstice 3 is a compact two-way passive bookshelf design by Triangle, a French company whose speakers are designed and built at its Soissons workshop. Triangle presents it as the successor to the Comète and as the compact model of the Solstice range, sold as a pair at USD 1,349 in teak, birch, black ash or white.
Key specs that matter
The Solstice 3 carries a 25 mm magnesium alloy tweeter coded TZ2540MG in a barrel-type horn plus a 16 cm midwoofer that uses a natural cellulose pulp membrane. The crossover point is 2,800 Hz. Triangle quotes 48 Hz to 22,000 Hz within 3 dB, a sensitivity of 90 dB, a nominal impedance of 8 ohm and a minimum of 5.3 ohm. Recommended amplifier power is 25 to 130 W RMS per channel into 8 ohm. Each cabinet measures 221 x 418 x 370 mm and weighs 12.9 kg, and a boxed pair weighs 29.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
The TZ2540MG combines a new phase plug, meant to widen high frequency dispersion, with a horn of revised profile and a barrel-shaped mouth. The midwoofer hangs in a new die-cast aluminium basket with an arch-shaped structure, developed specifically for the range, and uses Triangle's latest voice coil assembly. Inside, the DVAS system (Driver Vibration Absorption System) ties the drivers into the cabinet structure to stiffen it and absorb vibration generated by the moving mid-bass cone. The bass-reflex port is not on the baffle or rear panel but hidden inside the base as a laminar vent, a first for the brand intended to reduce flow noise. That base is a cast iron honeycomb covered by a thick silicone layer, which decouples the cabinet, and it tilts the speaker back by 2 degrees. The terminal block has a champagne finish, sits inside a silicone ring and accepts bare wire or banana plugs. Protective grilles come in the box. Triangle rates it for rooms of 10 to 35 m2 and lists hi-fi and home cinema as intended uses, including front duty in smaller spaces or surround duty in larger systems.
Pairing
Triangle designed its own S05 stand specifically for the Solstice 3, with a profiled aluminium tube, a glass base and a top plate sized to the speaker base, offered in black, white, teak and greige with aluminium spikes and rubber caps.
Alternatives
Within Triangle's Borea line the BR04 counts as a further two-way stand-mount design pairing a silk dome tweeter, a cellulose midwoofer and a front bass reflex port.
