The Classic 2/3 is a two-way reflex design for stands, part of the Classic range from Spendor Audio Systems, a UK firm whose Classic models descend from its designs of the 1970s. Spendor describes it as a larger two-way built around its large bass drive unit, and it sits between the smaller Classic 3/1 and the three-way Classic 1/2 in the range. The series received new drive units, revised crossovers and new cabinet damping in 2022. Design and manufacture are both British.
Key specs that matter
A single reflex port vents the enclosure. Its 22 cm bass/mid unit has a polyamide fibre reinforced polymer cone and works with a 22 mm polyamide dome tweeter, the two meeting at 3.6 kHz. Spendor gives 35 Hz to 25 kHz as the typical in-room response. Sensitivity is 88 dB for 1 watt at 1 metre, and the 8 ohm nominal impedance has a minimum of 6.8 ohm. Spendor rates power handling at 150 watts of unclipped programme. Each cabinet is 543 mm high, 273 mm wide and 338 mm deep and weighs 14.5 kg. Two gold plated terminal pairs are fitted, a magnet-held grille is supplied, and the real wood veneer options are walnut and cherry.
Engineering and use context
Spendor points to the crossover network, a strengthened cabinet structure and elastomer damping of the panels as the main changes in the current version. The proprietary bass/mid driver is large for a two-way, which lets one cone cover everything up to the tweeter handover without a separate midrange unit and keeps the crossover to a single division point. Thanks to the port, its bass limit comes within 5 Hz of the three-way Classic 1/2. Spendor calibrates each pair to broadcast reference limits. The twin terminal pairs let the bass and treble sections be fed by separate cables or amplifiers. Spendor advises use on its dedicated Classic 2/3 Stand, which is sold separately. That stand is a rigid open frame of four machined solid alloy pillars joined by two hubs, 425 mm high excluding spikes, with stainless steel top supports, non-slip polymer discs under the cabinet and adjustable M8 spikes.
Pairing
The recommended amplifier range is 25 to 200 watts. Given the high efficiency and a minimum impedance well above 6 ohm, the Classic 2/3 is an easy load, so moderately powered valve amplifiers as well as transistor integrated models can drive it.
Alternatives
The Spendor Classic 3/1 is the more compact Classic two-way, with an 18 cm EP77 bass/mid unit in a 395 mm tall cabinet weighing 9.9 kg.
