The AVR-X1800H is a seven-channel AV receiver from Denon with 8K video switching and the HEOS streaming platform built in. It sits below the AVR-X2800H in the X line, and Denon aims it at small to medium rooms run as a 7.2 system or as a 5.2.2 layout with two height speakers.
Key specs that matter
Seven discrete high-current amplifier channels are rated at 80 W per channel into 8 ohm from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.08 percent distortion with two channels driven, 120 W into 6 ohm at 1 kHz and 0.7 percent with two channels driven, and 175 W for a single channel into the same load and frequency at 10 percent. Video switching uses six HDMI inputs and one output, with 8K accepted on three of those inputs and on the output. Audio connections include two analogue inputs, an MM phono stage, a zone output, two independent subwoofer outputs and seven pairs of speaker terminals. Maximum power consumption is 430 W, idle draw is 29 W with ECO mode on and 39 W with it off, and standby is 0.1 W. The chassis measures 434 x 339 x 151 mm and weighs 8.6 kg, and the front has a one-line fluorescent display.
Engineering and use context
Both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks are decoded, with the Dolby Surround and DTS Neural X upmixers extending older stereo and 5.1 material to all speakers. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and its DTS counterpart create virtual height effects when no ceiling or elevation speakers are installed. The HDMI section passes 8K and can upscale 4K to 8K, supports HDCP 2.3 and eARC on the TV output, and carries HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dynamic HDR. For consoles it handles Variable Refresh Rate, Quick Frame Transport and Auto Low Latency Mode. HEOS streaming, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay 2 are all built in, and files up to 192 kHz and 24 bit in ALAC, FLAC and WAV play from USB or the network, as do DSD files at 2.8 and 5.6 MHz. The Bluetooth section can also transmit to one pair of wireless headphones while the speakers keep playing. Control options include the Denon AVR Remote app, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Josh.ai, plus the supplied RC-1257 handset.
Pairing
With its moderate power the receiver suits efficient bookshelf and floorstanding speakers that stay within its rated impedance range, and the dual subwoofer outputs let two powered subs share the bass load. Record players fitted with an MM pickup plug straight into the receiver, so no outboard phono preamp is required. A second pair of speakers in another room can play a separate source through the zone output while the main room runs 5.1 surround, and Denon Home wireless speakers join through HEOS.
Alternatives
The Denon AVR-X2800H is the next 7.2 channel receiver up, rated at 95 W per channel with six HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs.
