The AVR-S970H is a 7.2 channel AV receiver from Denon with 8K video support and HEOS network streaming built in. Atmos from Dolby and DTS:X are both decoded, and the receiver handles current HDMI 2.1 gaming features and includes an MM phono input so a turntable can be connected directly.
Key specs that matter
Seven discrete power amplifiers are rated at 90 W per channel into 8 ohm across 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.08% THD with two channels driven. Further ratings are 125 W into 6 ohm with two channels at 1 kHz and 0.7% THD, and 185 W with a single channel driven into the same load at 10% THD. There are two independent subwoofer outputs and a multichannel pre-out at 0.2 V. Six HDMI inputs, three of them 8K capable, feed two HDMI outputs, one with eARC. The chassis is 434 mm wide, 340 mm deep and 167 mm high without the antenna, which raises the height to 236 mm, and it weighs 9.5 kg. Operating consumption is 500 W.
Engineering and use context
HDMI 2.1 support covers 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz with HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dynamic HDR, plus Auto Low Latency Mode, VRR and QFT for games consoles. Video can also be scaled to 8K with the on screen menu overlaid, and HDCP 2.3 is supported. Surround formats include DTS HD Master, DTS:X Pro, DTS Virtual X, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos Music and Atmos height virtualisation. A Pure Direct mode bypasses processing. Audio inputs number four analogue, two optical, one coaxial and a front USB port, and file playback reaches FLAC, ALAC and WAV up to 192 kHz and 24 bit plus DSD at 2.8 and 5.6 MHz. HEOS provides whole home multiroom streaming, with AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TuneIn and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet, and the unit works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomePod. Two zones can play two sources at once. Speaker connection uses seven gold plated screw terminals, and an AM/FM tuner is fitted. The supplied RC-1253 remote is pre-programmed. Standby draw is 0.1 W, rising to 0.5 W with HDMI CEC active and staying under 2.0 W in network standby.
Pairing
A 5.2.2 layout with two ceiling or height speakers, or a 7.2 bed layout, matches the seven amplifier channels, and the pair of subwoofer outputs allows two powered subwoofers to be placed in different spots. A gaming console connects to one of the 8K ports for high frame rate 4K play.
Alternatives
The Denon AVR-S270BT is a simpler 5.1 channel receiver of the same S series without Atmos or network streaming.
