Emotiva's XPA-DR2 is a stereo amp that uses two Differential Reference amplifier modules in a fully balanced, fully differential layout. It is designed, assembled and tested in Franklin, Tennessee, and Emotiva lists it for USD 2,199. The maker names two-channel systems with demanding speakers and the main front pair in a home theatre as typical uses.
Key specs that matter
Driving both channels, Emotiva rates output at 550 W RMS per channel into 8 ohm and 800 W per channel into 4 ohm, each below 0.1% THD. At 100 W, 1 kHz and 8 ohm, THD+N is under 0.015%. Power bandwidth at rated output covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.1 dB, and broadband response extends from 20 Hz to 50 kHz (+0/-2 dB). Signal to noise is above 120 dB referenced to rated power and above 96 dB against 1 W, both A-weighted. Damping factor into 8 ohm exceeds 500, gain is 29 dB and input sensitivity for rated power is 2.1 V.
Engineering and use context
The Differential Reference design amplifies both halves of the audio signal separately, which Emotiva says reduces noise and distortion. Each channel has a fully discrete, dual differential, high current Class A/B output stage with a short signal path, fed by an efficient SMPS working with Optimized Class H topology. Because the outputs float, the company warns that the speaker terminals must never be tied together or referenced to ground, and damage from doing so is not covered by warranty. Maximum consumption is 1,700 W on continuous test tones. Emotiva lists a full-size chassis of about 432 x 203 x 483 mm with feet and a compact version about 381 mm deep, and it weighs about 19.3 kg. The heavy steel 4RU case has a milled aluminium faceplate, fault protection is microprocessor-controlled, and AC faults trip a resettable breaker at the back. Coverage is five years.
Pairing
Source options include a stereo preamp, an AV processor or a receiver fitted with pre outs. Every channel accepts XLR or RCA, picked by a toggle, with impedance of 33 kOhm balanced and 23.5 kOhm unbalanced. Gold-plated five-way posts accept bare wire, lugs and banana plugs, the minimum recommended load is 4 ohm per channel, and 12 V trigger connections plus automatic 100 to 250 VAC mains detection ease integration. The front panel carries a standby button with a halo ring that changes colour, and one blue status LED per channel turns red when a fault is found. A rear switch disables those LEDs and dims the halo, and a standard IEC inlet takes ordinary or custom mains cables.
Alternatives
The Emotiva XPA-2 Gen3 is the two-channel amplifier of the standard XPA Gen3 range without the Differential Reference modules.
