The BasX A2 is a stereo power amp in the Emotiva BasX line, introduced in the second generation refresh of the BasX amplifier range announced in spring 2021 alongside the A3, A4, A5 and A7. It was priced at USD 449 at launch and was the only stereo model in that group. Emotiva describes it as the foundation for a stereo system, a way to power the front main speakers of a surround setup, or an upgrade for the two front channels of an AV receiver.

Key specs that matter

Output is 160 W RMS per channel into 8 ohms across 20 Hz to 20 kHz at under 0.1 percent THD, and 250 W RMS per channel into 4 ohms at 1 kHz at under 1 percent, with both channels driven. Emotiva rates THD plus noise below 0.02 percent and gives an A-weighted noise figure of 112 dB. Broad band response extends from 10 Hz to 80 kHz within plus 0 and minus 1.8 dB, the damping factor at 8 ohms is above 500, minimum load is 4 ohms per channel and input sensitivity is 1.2 V. Input impedance is 27 kOhms, and the power bandwidth at rated output into 4 to 8 ohm loads runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.07 dB. The amplifier is fed through unbalanced RCA inputs and delivers its output to five-way speaker terminals. The case is about 432 mm wide, 102 mm high and 394 mm deep and weighs 11.43 kg, and the mains input detects 115 or 230 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz on its own.

Engineering and use context

The A2 amplifies in Class A/B, and it takes its current from a heavy-duty linear supply whose toroidal transformer is oversized. Compared with the earlier generation, Emotiva upgraded that supply and optimised the input stage. Fault protection guards the circuits in the background. A signal-activated switching feature turns the amplifier on as soon as music reaches its RCA sockets, and a remote trigger in and out let it power up together with a preamplifier or receiver and pass that command on to another device. The front panel follows the modern styling used across the refreshed BasX amplifiers.

Pairing

The unbalanced inputs connect directly to the preamplifier outputs of a stereo preamplifier, an integrated model with pre-out sockets or a surround receiver. In a multichannel system the A2 can drive the front pair while a multichannel BasX model such as the A4 handles surround or height speakers, with the trigger chain turning both on together. The minimum load rating covers low-impedance speakers.
