The M6si is a Musical Fidelity integrated amplifier with a switchable MM/MC phono stage and asynchronous USB input. Internally it is arranged as a separate preamplifier and two independent monobloc power amplifiers in one chassis, and Musical Fidelity calls it a destination product for most high-end audio applications, styled to match M6 and M6s series components. The M6si gained two new inputs over its predecessor, the phono section for turntables and the USB port for computer audio.
Key specs that matter
Each channel delivers 220 W into 8 ohm. At the onset of clipping the output swings 42 V RMS across 20 Hz to 20 kHz, or 120 V peak to peak, and current capability is 45 A peak to peak. Damping factor is 180, and every channel is built around two output device pairs. Through the line inputs, THD plus noise is typically below 0.007% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, A-weighted signal to noise exceeds 107 dB and input impedance is 40 kilohm, while response is within +0 and -0.1 dB from 10 Hz to 20 kHz. The amplifier measures 440 x 125 x 400 mm including feet and terminals and weighs 16.6 kg, or 21.3 kg packed.
Engineering and use context
The phono stage switches between MM at 3 mV nominal sensitivity and MC at 0.4 mV, uses 47 kilohm input impedance for both, keeps A-weighted noise more than 84 dB below signal and follows the RIAA/IEC curve within 0.5 dB between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. A 4 mm banana post links the turntable ground to chassis earth. Line sources connect through four RCA pairs along with one XLR balanced pair, and the type B USB port accepts asynchronous audio up to 24-bit and 96 kHz. Outputs are a constant-level line output, a preamp output for tasks such as bi-amping, trigger in and out, and twin pairs of speaker binding posts that also take banana plugs. The mains transformer is set at the factory for 115 or 230 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz, with 100 V AC as an alternative. Consumption is under 0.5 W in standby, 58 W when switched on and idle, and 680 W at maximum.
Pairing
The XLR input accepts a source with balanced outputs, MM and MC pickups both plug into the phono input, and a computer can play files through the USB port. In the box are an M6s series handset, two AAA batteries and a 10 A IEC mains cable.
Alternatives
The Musical Fidelity M6si500 is a higher-powered integrated amplifier listed alongside it in the M6 series.
