The M2si is the entry model among the Musical Fidelity integrated amplifiers, a line-level design with no phono stage and no digital inputs. The maker describes it as a puristic stereo amplifier that carries technology from its TITAN power amplifier down to a much lower price, and it is built with metal controls, an extruded aluminium front panel and an all-metal chassis. Its American price was USD 1,299, the case is sold in either silver or black, and Musical Fidelity ships a remote control in the box with each amplifier. The maker quotes a maximum consumption of 320 W.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 72 W per channel into 8 ohm and 137 W into 4 ohm, and Musical Fidelity also quotes peaks of 242 W into 2 ohm. Output voltage reaches 22 V RMS across 20 Hz to 20 kHz at clipping onset, or 62 V peak to peak, and the output stage can deliver 25 A peak to peak. The damping factor is 36. Measured at the line inputs, typical THD plus noise stays under 0.014% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, A-weighted noise lies more than 96 dB below the signal and input impedance is 40 kilohm. Frequency response is flat within +0 and -0.1 dB from 10 Hz to 20 kHz. The case measures 440 mm wide, 100 mm high including feet and 400 mm deep including terminals, with a net weight of 9.2 kg and 13 kg boxed.
Engineering and use context
The preamplifier stage runs in class A from its own independent power supply, and each channel of the power section uses a single pair of output devices. The rear panel carries six pairs of line-level RCA inputs, a tape output at constant level and a pair of preamp outputs intended for bi-amping. The speaker section has two sets of outputs that take 4 mm banana plugs or bare wire on binding posts. The amplifier also offers a switchable home-theatre throughput, on one of the line inputs. The unit leaves the factory preset for 115 or 230 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz, with 100 V AC available as an alternative.
Pairing
All six inputs are analogue, so a record player must be connected through a separate phono preamplifier and a streamer or computer has to bring its own DAC with line output. The doubled speaker outputs permit bi-wiring, and the preamp outputs let an extra power amplifier drive one half of a bi-amped pair of loudspeakers.
Alternatives
The Musical Fidelity M3si is the step up, rated at 85 W per channel into 8 ohm and adding an MM phono input and an asynchronous USB input.
