The NAD D 3020 V2 is a compact HybridDigital amplifier that NAD presents as the new and improved version of the D 3020, itself built on the concept of the original 3020 from the 1970s. For V2 the company refined the looks and added a phono input for vinyl playback. Bjorn Erik Edvardsen, designer of the original 3020 and NAD Director of Advanced Technology, took part in developing the D 3020 range.
Key specs that matter
Continuous output is 30 W per channel into 4 and 8 ohm from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.1 % THD with both channels driven. IHF dynamic power is 60 W into 8 ohm, 100 W into 4 ohm and 150 W into 2 ohm, clipping power exceeds 50 W at 1 kHz into 4 ohm, and peak output current is above 18 A. Damping factor is over 300 and frequency response is within 0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The speaker output reaches over 98 dB signal to noise referenced to 2.828 V, and THD at 1 W is below 0.01 %. The gross size is 58 x 186 x 219 mm including feet, knob and terminals, with a net weight of 1.4 kg. Standby consumption is below 0.5 W.
Engineering and use context
Edvardsen developed the version of NAD PowerDrive used here, which NAD says allows low impedance drive and high dynamic power at very low distortion, combined with a precision soft clipping circuit. A Bass EQ adds 6 dB at 80 Hz and is designed to keep ported woofers of small speakers from being overdriven. The DAC handles 24 bit and 192 kHz and uses 8 channels mixed to 2 for improved resolution. The MM phono stage has accurate RIAA equalisation, an infrasonic warp filter, high overload margin and 1.15 mV sensitivity. According to NAD, the design needs only 20 % of the power drawn by traditional hi-fi amplifiers.
Pairing
Coaxial and optical inputs accept computers, CD and DVD players, set top boxes, media streamers and satellite or cable receivers, and a line input serves other analogue components. Bluetooth with aptX streams from a smartphone, tablet or laptop. A full-range preamp output and a separate subwoofer output extend the system, and a separate headphone amplifier delivers up to 6.8 V into 300 ohm. The TV Connect function learns commands from a TV remote, and a wireless remote is supplied. The shipping weight is 2.1 kg, and the line stage reaches over 106 dB signal to noise at unity gain. NAD advises leaving at least 55 mm behind the unit for cables.
