The NAD C 3050 is a stereophonic amplifier created to mark 50 years of the company and inspired by the original NAD 3030 Stereophonic Amplifier. A walnut-finished cabinet, dual illuminated VU meters, push-button input selectors and the cursive-script logo recall 1970s stereo systems, while the circuitry inside is current. NAD announced global retail availability in May 2023 at USD 1,399, CAD 1,899, EUR 1,599 and GBP 1,299.
Key specs that matter
Continuous output is 100 W per channel into both 8 and 4 ohm from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and instantaneous peak power reaches 135 W per channel. Clipping power exceeds 115 W at 1 kHz and 0.1 % THD, and peak output current is above 20 A into 1 ohm for 1 ms. THD stays under 0.03 % from 250 mW to full rated output. The unit measures 450 x 127 x 355 mm and weighs 10 kg, rising to 12.6 kg in its shipping carton. Standby draw is 0.5 W with the network off and 2.0 W with it on.
Engineering and use context
NAD fits a HybridDigital UcD amplifier section, which NAD describes as having vanishingly low harmonic and intermodulation distortion. Digital conversion uses a Texas Instruments PCM5242 differential DAC, supporting high-resolution audio to 24 bit and 192 kHz with MQA decoding, and FLAC, WAV and AIFF files are also listed. Inputs cover HDMI eARC for television audio, a single optical input, a single coaxial input, one set of line-level analogue inputs and an ultra-low-noise moving-magnet phono stage with infrasonic filtering. On the rear panel an MDC2 expansion slot accepts optional modules, and the BluOS-D card adds high-resolution multi-room streaming along with bidirectional aptX HD Bluetooth. An IR remote control is included. The same slot can take modules for other future functions, which NAD describes as its MDC2 future-proofing technology, and the push-button selectors choose between all sources directly from the front panel.
Pairing
Speaker A and speaker B terminals let the owner connect and switch between two speaker pairs from the front panel. A subwoofer output handles an active bass unit, while the pre-amp out and main-in sockets let the unit be used with an external power amplifier or as a power amplifier on its own. A dedicated headphone amplifier drives headphones directly, and vinyl playback needs no outboard phono preamplifier. For installers the rear carries a 12 V trigger output and an IR input.
Alternatives
The NAD C 399 is a HybridDigital DAC amplifier in the Classic line with two MDC2 slots.
