Streaming & Network Audio

Streaming and network audio means playing music from online services or a home server over Ethernet or Wi-Fi through a dedicated streamer. It has replaced the disc as the main source in many Hi-Fi systems, so the network player now sits at the centre of the rack.

What streaming & network audio is & why it matters

A network streamer receives files over LAN (local area network) and passes them to a DAC (digital-to-analogue converter), either inside the box or external. Control comes from an app, with protocols such as UPnP, Roon Ready, AirPlay and Tidal Connect. Lossless services deliver CD quality and hi-res files up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Wired Ethernet keeps playback stable, and some brands add audio-grade switches to isolate noise.
