Floorstanding loudspeakers — Dynaudio Emit 50

The Emit 50 is a Dynaudio three-way tower belonging to the Emit series. The design and tuning were done in Denmark, and Dynaudio states that its midrange driver is derived from the unit Dynaudio used in the Evoke range. Rather than using one crossover topology for every driver, it combines different filter orders for tweeter, midrange and woofers.

Key specs that matter

A 28 mm Cerotar dome, equipped with Hexis, sits above a 15 cm midrange and two 18 cm woofers, all with cones made of MSP, or Magnesium Silicate Polymer. The crossover points are 540 Hz and 4,400 Hz, with a first-order filter on the tweeter, a second-order filter on the midrange and a fourth-order filter on the woofers. Dynaudio specifies sensitivity at 86 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, impedance at 4 ohm, and it allows 240 W under the IEC long term test. The response is 33 Hz to 25 kHz within 3 dB, while the -6 dB points lie at 28 Hz and 35 kHz. The bare cabinet measures 205 mm wide, 1,140 mm high and 312 mm deep, and with grille and feet it grows to 302 x 1,187 x 376 mm. Each speaker weighs 26 kg.

Engineering and use context

Its box is built from 18 mm MDF panels lined with a specialised polyester damping material, and a double-flared reflex port is cut into the rear panel. Each woofer, a type shared with the Emit 20, uses a one-piece MSP cone with an integrated dust cap, a copper voice coil and a dual-stacked magnet system, which Dynaudio says is arranged to transfer energy directly to the voice coil. The midrange driver, exclusive to the Emit 50, has a ferrite ceramic magnet, a short version of a 38 mm aluminium voice coil optimised for midrange work and a lightweight surround. Inside the Cerotar, which has a coated fabric diaphragm driven by a Ferrite+ strontium carbonate ceramic magnet, Hexis is placed so that it stops unwanted resonances from being reflected back toward the main dome. The hybrid crossover lets each driver get the slope that suits it, so no single topology forces a compromise on the others. Laminate finishes come in Walnut, White or Black, each of which comes with a black grille held by magnets.

Pairing

A demanding load with average sensitivity favours transistor amplification able to hold its rated output into low loads without strain, and the generous power handling means a fairly powerful amplifier can be used.
