Floorstanding loudspeakers — Dynaudio Emit 30

The Emit 30 is the smaller of two floorstanding models in the Emit range from Dynaudio of Skanderborg, Denmark, the series the company itself calls its entry point. It shares the cone material used in the Evoke line and pairs it with a tweeter derived from Dynaudio's more costly designs, all in a slim passive tower that stands 90 cm tall without its feet.

Key specs that matter

Each cabinet carries three drivers in a 2.5-way arrangement - a 28 mm Cerotar soft dome fitted with the Hexis insert, a 14 cm MSP mid/bass unit and a second 14 cm MSP woofer. The crossover points sit at 1,000 Hz and 3,500 Hz, with first-order slopes on the tweeter and second-order slopes on the woofer section. Dynaudio rates the response from 45 Hz to 25 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB and from 39 Hz to 35 kHz at the 6 dB points. Sensitivity is 88 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, the nominal load is 4 ohm, and the tower is rated to take 180 W over the long term under the IEC method. The bare cabinet measures 170 x 900 x 272 mm, growing to 268 x 947 x 335 mm with feet and grille fitted, and one speaker weighs 15.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

MSP stands for Magnesium Silicate Polymer, the cone material Dynaudio chose here for the same lightness and stiffness it brings to the pricier Evoke drivers. The voice-coils are wound from aluminium wire with a thin copper coating, which keeps moving mass low. The woofer motor stacks two strontium carbonate Ferrite+ ceramic magnets. On the Cerotar tweeter, the Hexis sits behind the main dome to break up resonances reflected back toward the rear of the playing surface. The cabinet is ported and assembled from 18 mm MDF with polyester fibre damping inside, and its double-flared port exits at the rear. Foam inserts supplied in the box can be pushed into that port when the speaker has to stand close to a wall. Black, white and walnut laminate finishes are offered, each with a black grille, and every speaker ships in its own carton of 1,049 x 318 x 444 mm weighing 20.4 kg.

Pairing

The low nominal load calls for an amplifier rated into low impedances rather than only 8 ohm, and the moderate sensitivity lets moderately powered integrated amplifiers and stereo receivers reach normal listening levels, as the speaker has no built-in amplification of its own.

The Dynaudio Emit 50 is the bigger tower of the Emit family, a three-way model with a 15 cm midrange, a pair of 18 cm woofers and a 240 W IEC rating.
