The V8 Series 4 is the 8 inch model of the three V Series 4 powered monitors that KRK Systems announced in 2016, where the number in each name gives the driver size. It is a two-way active studio speaker aimed at recording, mixing and mastering, and its launch price was USD 799 per monitor, USD 200 above the V6 and USD 400 above the V4 of the same generation.

Key specs that matter

Low and mid frequencies come from an 8 inch woven Kevlar woofer with a cast aluminium chassis and ferrite magnet, while a 1 inch Kevlar dome with its own ferrite magnet covers the top octaves above a 1.8 kHz crossover. Amplification is Class-D and bi-amped, with 200 W for the woofer channel and 30 W for the tweeter channel, 230 W in all, and KRK quotes a peak level of 118 dB SPL. The response holds within 3 dB from 35 Hz to 19 kHz, and the minus 10 dB range stretches from 29 Hz to 24 kHz. The enclosure stands 435 mm tall, 284 mm wide and 347 mm deep, and the monitor weighs 14.4 kg. One balanced combo socket takes XLR or quarter-inch TRS cables, and an IEC connector feeds mains.

Engineering and use context

KRK builds the box from MDF and aluminium, with a solid aluminium front baffle behind a black brushed faceplate and a reflex port facing forward. An EVA foam layer on the base works with that metal front to damp recoil from the woofer cone and to decouple the cabinet from the surface below it. The input stage is a pad rather than a volume control - the amplifier runs at full gain and the sensitivity switch sets how hard it is driven, while a separate trim takes off up to 3 dB in 0.5 dB increments for level matching. Further rear switches select ground lift, auto standby after 30 minutes of silence, and logo light on, off or dimmed. Safety circuitry covers mains surges, overdrive and heat build-up. The box contains a power cord, a grille that mounts under the faceplate for transport or busy rooms, and a KRK key for the rear controls, and a USB port is fitted for later firmware.

Pairing

As a self-powered speaker with its own amplification, the V8 takes a balanced line signal straight from an audio interface, a mixer or a passive monitor controller. KRK recommends the plus 4 dBu setting for most professional gear because it keeps hiss lower and leaves more headroom, while the factory setting of minus 10 dBV matches consumer outputs. Wall-bracket threads on the cabinet allow mounting off the desk.

Alternatives

The KRK V6 Series 4 is the more compact choice in the same series, pairing a 6.5 inch Kevlar woofer with 155 W of Class-D power.
