The Diamond 12.2 is the larger of the two mainstream standmounts in the original Diamond 12 range from Wharfedale, the British brand now part of International Audio Group. Wharfedale describes it as still compact but with more cabinet volume and a bigger driver than the Diamond 12.1, aimed at larger rooms and more powerful two-channel systems. The range reached shops in October and November 2020, with the 12.2 priced at GBP 299 a pair in Britain, while American buyers paid USD 499. In late 2025 it was succeeded by the Diamond 12.2i, which keeps the same drivers, cabinet size and sensitivity.

Key specs that matter

Two drivers load an 11.8 litre box vented through a rear reflex port. A 150 mm mid/bass unit with a Klarity cone works with a 25 mm dome tweeter, and the handover sits at 2.0 kHz. Response is quoted as 50 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB, with a -6 dB point at 43 Hz. Sensitivity is 88 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, nominal impedance 8 ohm with a minimum of 4.0 ohm, and peak output 96 dB. Wharfedale suggests amplifiers of 20 to 120 W. The cabinet measures 335 mm high, 200 mm wide and 285 mm deep, plus 28 mm for the grille and terminals, and weighs 8.2 kg. Finish choices were walnut pearl, black oak, white oak and light oak.

Engineering and use context

Klarity is a polypropylene compound with mica added, used in place of the Kevlar of earlier Diamond generations to stiffen a light cone and limit flexing. The motor behind it carries an aluminium ring that compensates the magnetic field, while an epoxy and glass fibre former carries the high-power coil. The tweeter dome is woven polyester film with a high-gloss coating. The crossover follows an acoustic Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB per octave topology and uses air-core inductors. For the enclosure, Wharfedale combines wood fibre board sections of different thickness in a layered sandwich, so the panels do not share one resonant frequency, and adds Intelligent Spot Bracing - computer-placed wooden braces linking opposing walls instead of a conventional figure-of-eight frame.

Pairing

With an impedance that dips to 4 ohm, the 12.2 needs an amplifier comfortable with a 4 ohm dip, and the upper half of the recommended power band gives more margin in bigger spaces. Since the port vents from the back, some clearance from the rear wall keeps bass output under control, and a stand of normal listening height places the tweeter near ear level.

Alternatives

The Diamond 12.1 is the more compact standmount in the original Diamond 12 lineup, built around a smaller Klarity mid/bass driver.
