The Diamond 12.0i is the most compact model in Wharfedale's Diamond 12i range, the latest generation of a speaker line that has served as an entry point into hi-fi since 1982. The 12i generation refines the Diamond 12 platform with revised cabinet tuning and tighter driver tolerances, and the 12.0i is sized for desktops, bookshelves and small rooms.

Key specs that matter

The 12.0i is a two-way bass-reflex design with a 100mm Klarity cone bass/midrange driver and a 25mm textile dome tweeter. Frequency response is 70Hz to 20kHz (+/-3dB), sensitivity is 87dB at 2.83V/1m and nominal impedance is 4 ohms. Bass extension reaches 65Hz at -6dB, the crossover sits at 2.7kHz and Wharfedale recommends 20 to 60W of amplification. Each 4.4-litre cabinet measures about 26.5 x 16 x 22.8cm and weighs 5.1kg.

Engineering and use context

The Klarity cone is a blend of polypropylene and mica. Polypropylene provides natural internal damping, while the mica filler raises stiffness, keeping the cone light and rigid with its own resonances well damped. The motor system includes an aluminium compensation ring that reduces the variation of voice coil inductance with cone position, a source of distortion in simpler drivers, and the voice coil is wound on an epoxy/glass-fibre bobbin that stays stable at high temperatures better than the paper formers common at this price. The bass reflex port was redesigned using laser interferometry and computational fluid dynamics to study airflow and pressure inside the port, work led by Wharfedale's director of acoustic design Peter Comeau, with the aim of reducing turbulence and port noise so the small cabinet can deliver usable bass without chuffing. The cabinet design was revised to control panel resonances, and the tweeter is a soft textile dome chosen for smooth dispersion. Because the 12.0i is so compact, it suits placement close to the listener on a desk as well as on stands or shelves.

Pairing

Compact integrated amplifiers, stereo receivers and desktop amplifiers drive the 12.0i comfortably, provided they are rated for 4-ohm loads. It works as a front pair in a small system or as surround and rear channels in a home cinema. Given the small bass driver, a subwoofer is a sensible addition for film soundtracks, and stands at seated ear height get the best from the tweeter's dispersion.

Alternatives

Wharfedale's own Diamond 12.1i and 12.2i are the larger stand-mount models in the same range, with bigger bass drivers for greater low-frequency extension.
