T+A elektroakustik is a German high-end audio manufacturer from Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1978 by Siegfried Amft. The name stands for Theorie und Anwendung, meaning theory and application in audio engineering. The company builds a full system range under one roof - sources, amplifiers, power supplies, loudspeakers and headphones - and is still run by the Amft family, with Siegfried and Conradin Amft at its head.
Range & what it's known for
The electronics are split into tiers. The HV Series sits at the top, with components such as the A 3100 HV amplifier, the SDX 3100 HV source and the PS 3100 HV external power supply. The R Series, Series 200, Caruso all-in-one systems and the compact CALA cover more modest budgets, while Symphonia completes the range. Loudspeakers run from the Talis models, such as the Talis 330, through Pulsar S 130 and Criterion S up to the Solitaire S line. Headphones are grouped as Solitaire P and Solitaire T. On the engineering side, T+A holds patents including an opto-electronic sensor that tracks diaphragm position, and in 1995 it presented the first fully digitally controlled active loudspeaker.
Who owns it and where it's made
T+A elektroakustik GmbH & Co. KG is a privately held family company. Siegfried Amft studied electrical engineering in Hannover under Fritz Sennheiser before setting it up, and his son Conradin now shares the management with him. Headquarters and engineering are in Herford, at Planckstrasse. Loudspeaker cabinets come from Roterring, a furniture maker in the Muensterland region with more than eight decades of cabinet experience. Around 100 people worked for the firm in 2005, and in 2008 it sold more than 8,000 loudspeakers and comparable audio devices.
The lineup in this catalog
More than thirty T+A products are listed, among them the Solitaire S 530 and Pulsar S 130 floorstanders, the Caruso S 10 loudspeaker, the PA 2500 R integrated amplifier, the PS 3100 HV power supply and the Solitaire P-SE planar headphone.
Who it's for
T+A is for a system in which electronics, speakers and headphones are engineered by one company in a single visual and technical language. A Caruso or CALA unit is the compact way in, the Series 200 and R Series form the middle step, and the HV components with Solitaire speakers are the long-term destination. It suits those who prefer a family-owned German maker with its own engineering department over assembling parts from many sources.
