PMC, the Professional Monitor Company, is a British loudspeaker manufacturer established in 1991 by Peter Thomas and Adrian Loader. It builds monitors for recording and broadcast studios as well as speakers for home hi-fi and home cinema, all based on transmission-line bass loading. The company employs around 60 people and is based in Biggleswade, England.

Range & what it's known for

For the home, PMC offers the Prodigy, twenty5 and fact series, together with on-wall and in-wall models in its CI range. Studio products include large monitors such as the BB5-A. Every range uses Advanced Transmission Line loading, in which a folded line inside the cabinet, lined with foam of varying absorbency, carries the rear output of the bass driver and lets it reinforce the low end at the port. The same principle runs from compact stand-mounts to the largest studio models, so domestic and professional designs share their core engineering and are built side by side in one factory.

Who owns it and where it's made

PMC is independent and privately owned, with Peter Thomas still the owner. Day-to-day management has passed to the next generation, with Ollie Thomas and Tom Loader serving as co-CEOs. The company was founded after Thomas, then a BBC engineer, and Loader set out to build a monitor that could handle the high levels of pop and rock work. Its speakers are designed and manufactured in England.

The lineup in this catalog

Loudspeakers. The home models start near GBP 2,000 and the largest cost well over GBP 30,000.

Who it's for

PMC speakers bring home the same bass-loading approach used in professional control rooms, including the BBC Maida Vale studios, Metropolis Studios in London and Stevie Wonder's Wonderland Studio. Prodigy opens the home range, the twenty5 series sits above it, and the fact series is placed higher still in the domestic line. Buyers who need a hidden installation can choose the CI models, and those working in studios can move to the professional monitors from the same maker.
