Est. year: 1973

Magnat is a German audio brand founded in 1973 in Cologne by Rainer Haas and now based in Pulheim, near Cologne. It began with about 60 employees and its own production, development and sales departments, became known in its early years for ribbon tweeter designs, and today sells loudspeakers for hi-fi, home cinema and custom installation along with a small range of electronics and turntables.

Range & what it's known for

The Signature series is the top hi-fi line, with models such as the Signature 999, 809, 607 and 603. The Monitor S series (S80 ATM, S70, S30, S10 B) covers hi-fi and home cinema at lower cost, while the Monitor Reference 5A and 2A are active speakers. The Transpuls 1500 and 800A carry the name of the classic Transpulsar line. Cinema Ultra adds THX-certified models such as the LCR 100-THX and SUB 300-THX, and Symbol X (160, 130) and Interior (IW 810, IC 82, ICP 62) cover outdoor, in-wall and in-ceiling use. Electronics include the MA 900 and MR 780 receivers, the MC 400 network receiver and the MTT 990 turntable. Ribbon technology was dropped around 1990 because of cost and revived briefly with the All Ribbon 12 in 2001.

Who owns it and where it's made

In the 1990s Magnat moved from Cologne to Pulheim-Brauweiler. After several changes of owner it passed to VOXX International, whose Premium Audio Company subsidiary also held Klipsch, Jamo, Onkyo, Pioneer and Heco. The Pulheim office also handled German distribution for several of those sister brands. In the past Magnat also used the Transpulsar name for its top products and Sonobull for entry models, and in 2023 it marked its 50th anniversary with special editions.
