The MAGNAT Signature 507 is a four-way floorstanding loudspeaker. For the fiftieth anniversary of the company in 2023, MAGNAT issued a limited special edition of the 507 with a high gloss baffle in a new graphite grey. The speaker is developed by Premium Audio Company Germany in Pulheim and carries the engineered in Germany label.

Key specs that matter

This is a double bass, bass reflex design. Two 6.5 inch woofers and a 6.5 inch midrange cover the lower bands, while a 1.2 inch dome tweeter and a 0.75 inch super tweeter handle the treble, with crossover points at 400 Hz, 2,800 Hz and 17,500 Hz. Rated response spans 23 Hz to 53,000 Hz, sensitivity is 92 dB and impedance is 4 to 8 ohm. Power handling is 200 W RMS and 350 W maximum, and an amplifier with more than 30 W is recommended. The bare cabinet measures 205 mm wide, 1030 mm high and 332 mm deep, growing to 286 x 1070 x 332 mm with feet and terminal, and weight is 18.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

The 507 uses a newly developed Hi-Res tweeter module with two fmax domes. The larger dome has an extra thick surround for low frequency coupling to the midrange, and the smaller super dome gives wide dispersion and extends reproduction up to 50 kHz. Both use neodymium ring magnets, and the front panel is shaped with a dedicated sound guide. The woofer-midrange units are FE drivers with coated paper cones and ventilated voice coils for load capacity, mounted in solid metal baskets with large ventilation openings, and fixed behind solid decorative rings held by six screws. The whole design was optimised with Klippel measurement. The cabinet is built from low resonance E1 MDF panels, and a rounded Airflex reflex opening keeps port noise low. Resonance damping rubber feet are included, and a fabric grille can be detached. Other feature icons list ferrofluid cooling, APOC and LPC circuitry.

Pairing

An amplitude and phase optimised crossover with acoustic 24 dB filters and quality parts feeds a big terminal with large screw connectors and gold-plated contacts. Because the terminal has two sections, the 507 can be driven either by one stereo amplifier or by two amplifiers, one feeding the woofers and one the upper drivers.

Alternatives

In the Signature 700 series MAGNAT offers the Signature 707, a four-way double bass floorstander with ceramic-aluminium sandwich cones.
