Est. year: 2007

Kanto Audio is a Canadian maker of powered speakers, subwoofers, stands and turntables, founded in January 2007 by David Reid and headquartered in Langley, British Columbia. The company is known for compact self-amplified bookshelf and desktop speakers that need no separate amplifier, often in colourful finishes, sold alongside matching stands and accessories.

Range & what it's known for

Most of the range belongs to the YU family of powered speakers, from the original YU to the YU2, YU4 and YU6, together with the compact ORA and ORA4 desktop pairs. TUK sits higher in the range with a built-in USB DAC, phono preamp and AMT tweeter, Ren is a powered stereo pair with HDMI ARC for use next to a TV, and SUB8 is a compact sealed 8-inch subwoofer. More recent additions include the Obi3 turntable and the small UKI speaker. Kanto relies on Class-D amplification and straightforward DSP, and many models combine Bluetooth, phono and USB inputs in one box.

Who owns it and where it's made

Founder David Reid still leads Kanto as CEO and Chief Product Officer, with Jason Tong as CFO, Josh Nadeau as general manager Eric Smith as VP of business development and Rob Maudsley as director of engineering, with operations in Langley and Coquitlam. Before its own speakers, the business began with OEM product design for other manufacturers and an Apple docking station in 2007. Products are designed in Canada and built by offshore manufacturing partners. Apart from audio, the company also makes AV mounting solutions and home entertainment furniture.

Powered speakers and stands. Kanto models sell for roughly USD 150 to 500.

Who it's for

A desk, a bedroom or a TV that needs a complete system in one pair of speakers, without a separate amplifier, is the setting Kanto designs for. A typical start is the ORA or YU2 on a desk, with a move to the YU4 or YU6 for a living room, TUK for a turntable and computer setup, and the SUB8 added later for more bass extension, with a matching Kanto stand to raise any pair to ear height.
