Canton is a German loudspeaker manufacturer founded in October 1972 and based in Weilrod, Hesse, about 35 kilometres northwest of Frankfurt. The name joins the Latin cantare, to sing, with the German word Ton, meaning sound. Canton describes itself as the largest German hi-fi loudspeaker maker and the third largest in Europe, and its catalogue runs from compact entry models to large passive floorstanders, home cinema sets, built-in speakers and wireless products.
Range & what it's known for
Current series include the Reference family, now led by the Reference K models, the newly revised Vento line, the entry-level GLE and Townus ranges, and the Plus and Pro series of compact and installation speakers. Smart Speaker products and Smart Sets add active, streaming-capable models and soundbars for buyers who want fewer boxes. The Karat name has also appeared in the brand's history. Engineering work happens in an in-house development department with its own acoustic measurement facilities, which lets Canton design drivers, cabinets and crossovers for each series itself rather than buying finished designs.
Who owns it and where it's made
Canton Elektronik GmbH und Co. KG was set up by Hubert Milbers, Otfried Sandig, Wolfgang Seikritt and Günther Seitz and remains an independent German company. Around 80 people work for it. Development is based in Weilrod, and production takes place both in Weilrod and in the Czech Republic. Beyond home audio, Canton has supplied upmarket sound systems for Škoda cars and has been the official audio partner of the football club Eintracht Frankfurt since the 2020/2021 season.
The lineup in this catalog
The catalog carries loudspeakers in several categories, costing from about EUR 300 for compact bookshelf models to well over EUR 20,000 for the top Reference floorstanders.
Who it's for
Canton can equip a whole house with one brand, from a first pair of GLE or Townus speakers to a Reference system for a dedicated listening room. The path usually runs through Vento as the middle step before the Reference series. Those who prefer a simple active setup can start with a Smart Speaker or Smart Set, and owners planning a multichannel room can match centre, surround and built-in models from the same series.
