Canton introduced the Power Sub 10 S2 as the second-generation version of its 10-inch GLE subwoofer, with a new driver generation as the main change over the earlier Power Sub 10. The Weilrod maker aims it at stereo and home cinema systems of middle size, and it belongs to the S2 wave of GLE products alongside the Power Sub 8 S2 and Power Sub 12 S2. In Germany it lists at EUR 849 apiece, with black or white matt decor and a fabric grille held by magnets.

Key specs that matter

The active driver measures 257 mm and fires forward from the baffle. Its cone is now made from a black aluminium and titanium material that Canton calls ATB, carried on a wave surround. Below it, a downward-facing passive radiator completes the bass reflex arrangement. Amplification is specified as 200 W rated and 330 W music. Bandwidth runs from 22 Hz up to 200 Hz, and the low-pass point is variable between 50 and 200 Hz. The cabinet is 32 cm wide, 43.2 cm high and 45.3 cm deep, with a net mass of 16.2 kg. In standby the unit draws 0.32 W.

Engineering and use context

The long-throw woofer is designed for large cone travel, and the passive radiator in the base extends the low end and gives a gradual roll-off instead of the output of an open port. Canton's SC circuit, short for Soft Clipping, limits distortion when the amplifier approaches its maximum and protects the drivers against overload. Low-frequency output can be adapted to the placement with a three-position room compensation switch. Processing is handled digitally, and users get knobs for gain, phase and crossover plus an automatic standby that turns the sub on when a signal is present. A double cone and the Bass Guide system appear in the feature list. Adjustable feet are fitted as standard, and spikes or absorbers can be added. The carton holds the subwoofer, grille, mains lead and instructions, and Canton grants two years of warranty on this active model.

Pairing

Hookup is possible at line level via two cinch sockets, which suits receivers and preamplifiers with a dedicated sub output, and a line output is provided as well. For integrated amplifiers without such a socket, two speaker-level inputs accept bare wire or banana plugs, so the sub sits between amplifier and main speakers. Canton lists matching companions from the GLE S2 range, among them the GLE 20 S2, GLE 30 S2, GLE 70 S2 and GLE 80 S2.

Alternatives

The Canton Power Sub 8 S2 is the compact sibling from this S2 generation, listed at EUR 749.
