The Smart Sub 10 is an active wireless subwoofer from Canton of Weilrod in Germany and belongs to the Smart family of networked soundbars, speakers and amplifiers. Its defining trait is a very flat cabinet only 155 mm tall, so it can slide under a sofa or low sideboard or hang on a wall instead of standing in view. Canton lists it at EUR 749 including VAT in black semi-gloss under item number 04247 and in white semi-gloss under 04248, and it is also sold inside surround sets built around the Smart Soundbar 9 and Smart Soundbar 10. In Germany the single unit is an online exclusive, with a standard two-year warranty that can be extended to five years.

Key specs that matter

A single 219 mm (8.6 inch) woofer with a cellulose and graphite cone fires downwards inside a closed enclosure. A digital amplifier rated at 200 W music power drives it, and the stated transmission range is 27 Hz to 150 Hz. The cabinet measures 42 x 16 x 42 cm (W x H x D), so the footprint is square and wide while the height stays minimal. There is one RCA cinch low-level input for a wired link next to the Smart wireless connection, and standby draw in ECO mode is 0.32 W.

Engineering and use context

Putting the driver face down in a box of this shape lets the floor act as the boundary the cone works against, and it keeps the driver out of sight in a unit designed to be seen from above. The top is a polished tempered glass plate over a lacquered cabinet, and the mounting brackets for wall use come in the box. Height-adjustable feet level the cabinet on an uneven floor, and the base is prepared for spikes or absorbers. Canton fits its SC technology, a signal control stage meant to hold level stable, cut distortion and protect the woofer from damage at high volume. The sub switches itself on when an audio signal arrives and off again when it stops, so it needs no separate power button in daily use. Volume, phase and channel level are not set with knobs on the cabinet but from the Canton Smart product that controls it.

Pairing

Within the range it links wirelessly to the Smart Soundbar 9 and 10, the Smart Soundbox 3 and the Smart Amp 5.1, which then handle its settings, and the cinch input lets a receiver or amplifier from another brand feed it by cable.

Alternatives

In the same Smart range, the Canton Smart Sub 12 is a larger wireless subwoofer with a 308 mm downfiring woofer and a stated range reaching 24 Hz.
