Floorstanding loudspeakers — Dynaudio Confidence 60

The Confidence 60 belongs to the redesigned four-model Confidence range from Dynaudio, alongside the Confidence 20, 30 and 50. The range was introduced at CEDIA 2018 and reached North America in late 2018, and Dynaudio still lists the Confidence 60 as a current product. It is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker whose drivers, baffle and directivity control were developed with analysis in the Jupiter measuring facility in Denmark.

Key specs that matter

Dynaudio pairs a 28 mm Esotar 3 soft dome tweeter with two 15 cm MSP midrange units and two 23 cm MSP woofers. Its crossover splits the bands at 200 Hz and 2,580 Hz using second- and third-order slopes combined with DDC. Dynaudio rates sensitivity at 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, nominal impedance at 4 ohm with a minimum of 3.7 ohm at 71 Hz, while the IEC long term figure for power reaches 600 W. Response is quoted as 29 Hz to 22 kHz within 3 dB. Bass reflex loading vents through a down-firing port. Each speaker stands 1,634 mm tall, 271 mm wide and 469 mm deep and weighs 66.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

DDC stands for Dynaudio Directivity Control, and on this model it takes the form of the DDC Lens, a machined aluminium waveguide integrated into the baffle. Dynaudio says it concentrates radiation into a tight vertical beam to limit reflections from floor and ceiling while keeping wide horizontal dispersion. The baffle itself is made of Compex, a precision-machined composite that replaced the MDF baffle of the previous Confidence generation and is described as stiffer, more inert and lighter than MDF, with enough damping to absorb resonances. The Esotar 3 tweeter carries the Hexis inner dome together with changes to materials and airflow. Both midrange drivers use the Horizon surround, which follows the cone shape right to the edge of the unit to reduce the first resonant mode and add radiating area, and they sit in a newly designed basket. The woofers are NeoTec designs with neodymium magnets, voice coil formers made of three layers of glass fibre for stiffness, and venting machined into the magnet structure. Range finishes listed at launch were Midnight high-gloss, Smoke high-gloss, Raven Wood high-gloss, Ruby Wood high-gloss and Blonde Wood, with a black grille.

An impedance that dips below the nominal rating in the bass points toward solid-state stereo or monoblock amplification that handles low loads with ease and has deep current reserves.

Alternatives

A smaller Dynaudio floorstander is the Contour 30i, a 2.5-way design with two 18 cm MSP drivers and an Esotar 2i tweeter rated at 300 W.
