The T1 EVO Phono is a belt-driven record player by Pro-Ject Audio Systems with a switchable phono preamplifier built into its CNC-machined plinth. It ships with a pre-adjusted Ortofon OM10 cartridge with an elliptical diamond stylus, and buyers choose a plinth finished in high-gloss black, satin white or walnut. According to Pro-Ject, the deck is made by hand in Europe, and there is no plastic in its construction. It was announced on 24 September 2024 as part of the T1 EVO range at USD 499 or GBP 399.

Key specs that matter

Speed change between 33 and 45 rpm is electronic. The heavy blasted-glass platter, 8 mm thick and covered by a felt mat, spins on a main bearing combining brass with stainless steel. Pro-Ject quotes speed variance of 0.7 percent at 33 rpm and 0.6 percent at 45 rpm, wow and flutter of 0.25 percent at 33 rpm and 0.23 percent at 45 rpm, and signal-to-noise of 65 dB. The arm, 8.6 inches long and made of aluminium, reaches 218.5 mm in effective length, carries an effective mass of 8.0 g and has a 22.0 mm overhang. A pre-mounted counterweight suits cartridges of 5 to 10 g, and downforce can be set from 0 to 50 mN, preset to 17.5 mN at the factory. Output is on RCA sockets, and the preamplifier switch lets the same pair of sockets serve both modes. Outer dimensions are 415 x 100 x 335 mm (WxHxD), and the net weight is 3.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

Depending on the position of the preamplifier switch, the RCA output delivers either a line-level signal or the raw cartridge signal. The tonearm is made in one piece with an integrated headshell and runs in low-friction bearings. The sub-platter is the larger Debut-sized version introduced with the EVO generation. Pro-Ject describes the glass platter as zero-resonance, and the deck stands on vibration-absorbing feet. An external supply delivers 15 V DC at 800 mA from 110 to 240 V mains at 50 or 60 Hz, and the maximum power consumption is 4.5 W. In the box Pro-Ject packs the lid, the mat, the adaptor and a Connect it Phono E lead terminated in RCA.

Pairing

With the preamplifier switched on, the turntable connects to any line input such as AUX on an integrated amplifier, or directly to powered speakers with RCA inputs. With it switched off, the deck can feed an amplifier's MM phono input or a dedicated phono preamplifier, which gives a route for upgrading the phono stage later without replacing the turntable.

Alternatives

The Pro-Ject T1 EVO BT shares the glass-platter platform and places a Bluetooth transmitter inside at USD 599.
