The T1 EVO is a turntable with belt drive, designed by Pro-Ject Audio Systems, which the maker describes as having no plastic in its construction, with a CNC-machined wooden plinth, a one-piece aluminium tonearm and a heavy glass platter. It is the base version of the T1 EVO family, which also includes a Phono model with a built-in preamplifier and a BT model with a Bluetooth transmitter. The range was announced on 24 September 2024 at USD 449 or GBP 359 for this version, against USD 499 and USD 599 for the Phono and BT models.
Key specs that matter
Playback covers 33 and 45 rpm. The platter is an 8 mm blasted-glass disc with a felt mat, and the main bearing pairs stainless steel with brass. Pro-Ject lists speed variance of 0.7 percent at 33 rpm and 0.6 percent at 45 rpm, wow and flutter of 0.25 and 0.23 percent, and 65 dB signal-to-noise. Measured from pivot to stylus, the 8.6-inch arm gives 218.5 mm effective length, an overhang of 22 mm and an effective mass of 8.0 g. Its counterweight covers cartridges of 5 to 10 g, and downforce is adjustable between 0 and 50 mN, pre-adjusted to 17.5 mN for the supplied cartridge. Its footprint is 415 mm wide by 335 mm deep, height is 100 mm, and it weighs 3.8 kg net.
Engineering and use context
Motor speed is governed by a precision generator, speed change is electronic across all three models, and the sub-platter is a larger Debut-sized part. The arm tube and headshell are formed as one aluminium piece, so there is no joint between them, and the cartridge fitted at the factory is an Ortofon OM10 with an elliptical stylus. The wooden plinth is shaped on CNC machines rather than moulded. The box contains a dust cover, the felt mat and a Connect it E semi-balanced phono cable. As the plain version of the family, the T1 EVO has neither the switchable preamplifier nor the wireless transmitter of its siblings, and its output is a cartridge-level signal.
Pairing
Since the OM10 works on the moving-magnet principle, the T1 EVO needs an MM phono stage, either as an input on the amplifier or as an outboard box. The Phono version of the same deck has the preamplifier built in, and a later cartridge upgrade must stay within the counterweight range.
Alternatives
The Pro-Ject RPM 3 Carbon is a turntable with a 10-inch carbon arm, a free-standing synchronous motor and a 300 mm MDF platter on an inverted bearing.
