The SL-1200GR2 is a Technics record player with direct drive, announced on 7 September 2023 as the next generation of the SL-1200GR together with its black twin, the SL-1210GR2. It is built around the iron-coreless direct-drive motor of the series, now governed by a new drive control method and a new multi-stage power supply. Technics set the price at USD 2,199 and EUR 1,999 at launch, with shipping planned from December 2023, and the US list price later stood at USD 2,499.99. The silver version carries the SL-1200GR2-S designation.

Key specs that matter

Supported speeds number three - 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm - with pitch adjustment ranges of plus or minus 8 and 16 percent. Starting torque is 2.2 kg-cm, the platter reaches 33 1/3 rpm from standstill in 0.7 seconds, and wow and flutter stays at 0.025 percent W.R.M.S. Its aluminium diecast platter measures 332 mm across and weighs about 2.5 kg with its rubber sheet. The static-balance S-shaped arm offers an effective length of 230 mm and an overhang of 15 mm. The deck measures 453 x 173 x 372 mm and weighs approximately 11.5 kg. Power draw is 11 W in use and 0.3 W in standby.

Engineering and use context

The headline change is Delta-Sigma Drive. Motor vibrations are reduced by driving the motor with a PWM signal generated through Delta-Sigma modulation, a high-precision 1-bit D/A conversion method taken from the JENO Engine, the full-digital amplifier technology of Technics. The power section combines a low-noise, low-voltage circuit with a switching supply and adds Current Injection Active Noise Cancelling. The platter uses a two-layer construction with deadening rubber for rigidity and vibration damping. The tonearm offers an initial-motion sensitivity of 5 mg or less, arm height adjustment from 0 to 6 mm and tracking force settings between 0 and 4 g. Overall styling was refined with a new colour match of parts and a new body surface finish, and the packaging is free of expanded polystyrene, using shaped cardboard instead.

Pairing

The arm accepts cartridges weighing 5.6 to 12.0 g without an auxiliary weight and 10.0 to 16.4 g with the supplied extra weight, which covers most moving-magnet and moving-coil designs. Like any turntable it needs a phono preamplifier suited to its cartridge ahead of a line-level amplifier.

Alternatives

Higher in the range sits the Technics SL-1210G-K, whose three-layer platter of about 3.6 kg is made of brass and aluminium and whose arm is magnesium.
