The PS01-Wave is a limited-edition turntable created as a joint venture between the Vienna-area maker Pro-Ject and the Austrian electronic musician Parov Stelar. Mechanically it is a Debut Carbon Esprit (DC) dressed in artwork applied in seven printing layers, and production was capped at 1,000 units worldwide. Pro-Ject lists it as sold out, so it now turns up mainly on the second-hand market.

Key specs that matter

It is a manual belt-drive deck running at 33 and 45 rpm, with the speed changed by hand at the pulley. Rated wow and flutter reach 0.19% at 33 rpm and 0.17% at 45 rpm, speed drift of 0.60% and 0.70%, and 68 dB of signal-to-noise. The 300 mm platter is acrylic. The 8.6-inch arm tube is carbon fibre, with an effective length of 218.5 mm, an effective mass of 6.0 g, an overhang of 18.5 mm and it accepts 10 to 30 mN of downforce. An Ortofon 2M Red moving-magnet cartridge comes fitted. With the lid closed it occupies 415 mm of width, 320 mm of depth and 118 mm of height, for a net mass of 4.9 kg. Power arrives from a 15 V DC, 0.8 A adapter, and standby draw is under 1 W.

Engineering and use context

Carbon fibre was chosen for the arm because it is stiffer than aluminium and resonates less, a material Pro-Ject notes is normally reserved for dearer tonearms. The acrylic platter adds mass and damping over a plain board platter. A low-noise AC motor is fed by the DC power supply through a synchronous AC generator, and the motor sits in a suspension of thermoplastic elastomer so that its vibration is decoupled from the plinth. Damping feet under the chassis further isolate the deck from the surface it stands on. Supplied accessories are limited to a dust cover and the power adapter, so a phono cable has to be sourced separately if one is not already at hand.

Pairing

The 2M Red is a moving-magnet design, so it plugs into any moving-magnet phono socket on an integrated amplifier or receiver, or into a standalone MM preamp, and no step-up transformer is involved. The arm's downforce range covers the 2M Red's recommended setting, and the supplied arm geometry is already aligned for it. The low arm mass leaves room for other moderate-compliance MM cartridges should the owner later swap the Ortofon.

Alternatives

The standard Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit (DC) offers the identical mechanical platform with the carbon arm and acrylic platter but without the limited Parov Stelar artwork.
