The Luxman PD-191A is a belt-driven turntable supplied complete with the LTA-710 tonearm, a static balanced arm that Luxman developed together with SAEC over two and a half years. It plays records at 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm, and Luxman allows every speed to be fine-adjusted on its own over a range of plus or minus 6 percent.

Key specs that matter

Rotation comes from an original high-torque brushless DC motor, governed by PID speed control and referenced to a MEMS oscillator chosen for its stable behaviour across temperature. The rated wow and flutter figure is no higher than 0.04 percent weighted RMS. The platter is machined from a single, extremely thick aluminium billet, measuring 35 mm in thickness and weighing 5.2 kg, which gives a moment of inertia of 0.7 t cm2. The chassis measures 491 mm wide, 128 mm high and 399 mm deep. The main unit weighs 24.8 kg, rising to 26.4 kg with the dust cover fitted, and power draw is only 5 W on 230 V 50 Hz or 115 V 60 Hz mains.

Engineering and use context

The LTA-710 has an effective length of 256 mm with a 16 mm overhang, giving a tracking error angle between +1.07 and -1.52 degrees. Its vertical bearing is a concealed knife edge, picked for sensitivity to small initial movements. The arm accepts cartridges weighing 4 to 11 g, or 17 to 24 g including the headshell, and anti-skating is adjustable from 0 to 4 g. The front panel is solid natural wood with a rosewood stain, matched with a hairline-finished aluminium top plate. Luxman lowered the centre of gravity by 12 mm compared with the preceding model. Large-diameter insulator legs contain a damping rubber with good temperature characteristics, and each leg can be raised by up to 5 mm for levelling. The box includes a headshell with D.U.C.C. lead wires, a rubber mat, the belt, platter handles, an EP adapter, counterweight and anti-skating weight, a set of setting tools, a power cable and a phono lead terminated in DIN at the arm end and RCA at the other.

Pairing

Because the PD-191A carries no internal phono circuitry, its output must go to an external RIAA stage. The supplied phono lead runs from the arm base straight into that stage, and the cartridge body must fall inside the mass window of the LTA-710. Mounting a pickup in the included headshell uses the D.U.C.C. lead wires already fitted, and the anti-skating weight sets bias force for the chosen tracking force.

Alternatives

Luxman also makes the PD-171A, another turntable in its analogue player range.
