The PD-151 is a Japanese-made turntable with belt drive. It premiered internationally on November 16 at the Tokyo International Audio Show and reached the United States in February 2019 at USD 3,895, with UK sales from August 2019 at GBP 4,500. It comes as a complete player with a Jelco tonearm fitted at the factory and is offered in silver or black. It was later succeeded by the PD-151 MARK II.

Key specs that matter

Speeds of 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm are selectable, each with independent pitch adjustment, and the pitch control offers six positions. The aluminium platter weighs 4 kg, has a diamond-cut surface and a moment of inertia of 22.4 kgf mm2, and wow and flutter is below 0.04% weighted RMS. The deck measures 465 x 133 x 393 mm and weighs 15.7 kg, and its power draw is 6 W.

Engineering and use context

A new high-torque brushless DC motor is fed by a sine wave pulse width modulation supply and regulated by a proportional-integral-derivative feedback loop. It turns the platter through an uncommonly wide belt, the same as on the PD-171A. The bearing pairs a PEEK thrust bearing with a brass radial bearing around a high-precision stainless steel spindle. A 10 mm machined aluminium top plate has an underslung chassis suspended beneath it as an additional layer of vibration damping, and rubber damping mounts isolate that chassis from the motor and the power transformer. Large rubber isolator feet give 8 mm of height adjustment. The Jelco arm is a static-balance, S-shaped design with one-point-cross suspension, an overall length of 229 mm, an effective length of 214 mm and 15 mm overhang. Internal wiring is oxygen-free copper, and the motor axle is also made of stainless steel.

Pairing

The removable OPPD-SH1 headshell is made of magnesium alloy and weighs 13 g, and it is also sold separately for about GBP 120. Its mount follows the SME standard, so other detachable headshells fit. On the arm, the standard counterweight covers 4 to 12 g, with an accessory weight extending the range to 9 to 19 g for heavier cartridge and headshell combinations. Output and IEC power cables are detachable, so owners can choose their own phono lead. An EP adaptor and a platter slip-sheet are included, and a 4 mm thick acrylic dust cover with cam hinges is optional.
