The PD-151 MARK II is a Japanese turntable with belt drive and a factory-fitted tonearm, made by Luxman. It follows the earlier PD-151 and keeps that model's layout, while adding a newly specified arm called the LTA-309. Luxman describes the design as reduced to the three main elements of an analogue player - motor unit, platter and arm - and the top panel carries only power, start and speed controls. In the United States it was listed at USD 5,695 and the maker's warranty ran three years on parts and labour alike.

Key specs that matter

Three speeds are offered - 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm - and each one can be trimmed independently by up to 6 percent. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.04 percent or less WRMS. The platter is machined from aluminium with a diamond-cut finish, measures 300 mm across and 25 mm thick, and weighs 4.0 kg, giving a moment of inertia of 0.219 t-cm2. The static-balanced S-shaped arm has an effective length of 222.5 mm, a pivot-to-spindle distance of 204.5 mm, 18 mm of overhang and a tracking error of 3 degrees or less. The chassis measures 465 x 133 x 393 mm and weighs 15.8 kg, or 17.2 kg once the lid is fitted, and power draw is 6 W on 230 V or 115 V mains.

Engineering and use context

Speed is held by a brushless DC motor governed by PID feedback control, and the heavy platter works as a flywheel to smooth rotation. It turns on a stainless-steel spindle running in a PEEK thrust bearing with brass radial bearings. The arm uses knife-edge bearings developed by SAEC, a Japanese company with more than 40 years of work on such bearings, and it accepts adjustments for arm height, stylus pressure and anti-skate. Cartridges plug in through a machined aluminium headshell with an H4 bayonet fitting, and the arm is wired with oxygen-free copper. The deck is not suspended - it relies on mass instead, with a thick top plate of machined aluminium. Internal damping mounts isolate the motor and transformer from that plate, and rubber feet can be raised by up to about 5 mm for levelling. The package includes a rubber mat, belt, EP adaptor, counterweight, adjustment tools and a DIN to RCA phono cable, while the OPPD-DSC151 dust cover is sold as an option.

Pairing

The arm is rated for cartridges weighing 4 to 10 g, or 17 to 23 g once mounted in a headshell, which covers most mainstream moving magnet and moving coil designs. There is no internal phono preamplifier, so the supplied DIN to RCA lead must go to a separate MM or MC phono stage or to the phono input of an amplifier.

Alternatives

Luxman's PD-171A is a heavier belt-drive player limited to 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, using an AC synchronous motor and a 5 kg platter.
