The PD-171A is a two-speed turntable from Luxman of Japan, sold with a universal tonearm already mounted on a heavy combined metal and wood plinth. It was priced at USD 6,495 in the United States, and an armless PD-171AL version was offered for owners who want to fit a tonearm of their own. Luxman pairs a newly developed high-output power supply circuit with an AC synchronous motor, and the motor turns the platter through a belt.
Key specs that matter
Speeds are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, each of which can be adjusted independently over a 5 percent range, and wow and flutter is quoted at 0.04 percent or less WRMS. The 30 cm platter is machined from aluminium and weighs 5 kg, with a moment of inertia of roughly 0.7 t-cm2. The motor is described as a high-torque reaction and AC synchronous type. The unit measures 492 x 140 x 407 mm to the top of the platter and 195 mm tall with its dust cover closed. It runs on 230 V at 50 Hz and draws 38 W.
Engineering and use context
A 32-bit microcomputer and a precision clock generator control the motor supply, and a wide drive belt was chosen to reduce vibration passed into the platter. The platter sits on a 16 mm stainless-steel spindle in a rigid bearing, with a brass thrust bearing and a ball race made of polyetheretherketone. A 15 mm aluminium base plate is hung by an under-slung suspension, the motor and transformer have floating mounts, and four large spring and rubber insulator feet support the plinth. The static-balance arm uses a one-point cross suspension bearing, and its base is a separate part, so arm boards for SME, SAEC, FR and Ortofon arms can be used in its place. An LED-lit stroboscope helps set speed precisely, and a detachable LED light illuminates the stylus during cueing. The package also contains a magnesium alloy headshell, a 4 mm acrylic dust cover on cam hinges and a 5-pin DIN to RCA cable of OFC copper. The platter is lowered onto its bearing using handles that screw into two threaded holes.
Pairing
No cartridge is supplied, and the removable headshell makes swapping cartridges straightforward. The arm connects through a standard 5-pin DIN socket, so the included cable or any other DIN tonearm lead can carry the cartridge signal to whichever MM or MC phono preamplifier the system uses. Buyers planning a different arm can choose the PD-171AL and one of the listed arm boards.
Alternatives
Luxman's PD-151 MARK II is a lighter belt-drive model adding 78 rpm, using a brushless DC motor with PID control and a 4.0 kg aluminium platter under an arm with knife-edge bearings.
