The DCD-1700NE from Denon plays Super Audio CD as well as standard CD, and it also reads data discs holding high-resolution files. It replaced the DCD-1600NE and was launched together with the PMA-1700NE integrated amplifier of matching style and size. Denon lists it at USD 1,699 in black or silver, with aluminium used for the front panel and for the power, function and open/close buttons. The unit measures 434 x 135 x 384 mm (width, height, depth) and weighs 9.0 kg net.
Key specs that matter
A single TI Advanced Current Segment PCM1795 chip rated for 192 kHz and 32 bit converts the signal after Advanced AL32 Processing Plus, an algorithm that interpolates missing data points, up-samples and extends word length. SACD frequency response reaches 2 Hz to 50 kHz at -3 dB, while CD runs 2 Hz to 20 kHz at -0.5 dB. Signal-to-noise ratio is 119 dB on SACD and 117 dB on CD, and harmonic distortion is 0.0010% on SACD against 0.0016% on CD. Dynamic range is 112 dB for SACD and 101 dB for CD. Line output level is 2.0 V RMS into 10 kohm, and power draw is 24 W in operation and 0.1 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
The TD-505 FOR DM drive uses Denon's S.V.H. (Suppress Vibration Hybrid) loader, whose low centre of gravity limits vibration inside and outside the mechanism. The master clock sits right next to the DAC, with two oscillators covering the 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz families. The digital and analogue circuits each have their own power transformer, and both are mounted low in the chassis near the feet so their vibration goes to the ground. The tray takes SACD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW data discs. From DVD media it reads WAV, FLAC and AIFF up to 192 kHz and 24 bit, ALAC up to 96 kHz, and DSD up to 5.6 MHz, while files on CD-R/RW are limited to 48 kHz. Short circuit patterns are meant to limit crosstalk from one channel to the other and between neighbouring circuits. Stereo and multichannel SACD discs are accepted, with playback from the stereo layer, and Super Audio CD Text is shown on the single-line display, which has bright, dim, dark and off settings. Last function memory, auto standby and firmware updates are supported, and each unit is tuned by the Denon Sound Master. There is no USB port and no headphone socket.
Pairing
One pair of gold-plated fixed RCA outputs feeds a line input on an amplifier, while single optical and coaxial digital outputs can drive an outboard converter. The supplied system remote also operates the PMA-1700NE, and a remote control bus terminal is fitted.
Alternatives
The Denon DCD-900NE is a CD-only model at USD 599 with a front USB input for file playback.
