The D-07X is a digital media player from Luxman of Japan that reads SACD and CD and doubles as a USB DAC, carrying design elements handed down from the D-10X, the top model of its disc range. Besides SACD and MQA-CD, it reads ordinary CD along with burned CD-R and CD-RW, plus high-resolution files from a computer or network storage, and the US retail price was USD 9,999.
Key specs that matter
Two ROHM MUS-IC BD34301EKV converters work in dual-mono configuration. Over USB the player takes PCM from 44.1 to 768 kHz at up to 32 bit and DSD from 2.8 to 22.4 MHz, while coaxial and optical inputs accept PCM from 44.1 to 192 kHz at 16, 20 or 24 bit, with a digital coaxial and an optical output on the rear panel. Output is 2.4 V at 300 ohm unbalanced and 600 ohm balanced, with SACD and DSD at 2.3 V. CD response runs from 5 Hz to 20 kHz within 1 dB, SACD reaches 38 kHz and USB 47 kHz at minus 3 dB. Distortion is 0.0016% on CD, 0.0007% on SACD and 0.001% via USB, with signal-to-noise of 122 dB for CD and USB and 125 dB for SACD. Consumption is 37 W, and Luxman calls it a new class of digital media player with an oversized supply. The chassis measures 440 x 132 x 410 mm and net weight is 17.0 kg.
Engineering and use context
Discs are read by the LxDTM-i mechanism, which is mounted directly onto the chassis side panel to block outside vibration. The drive sits at the left in an asymmetric configuration that gives the shortest signal path and leaves room for the analogue circuits. A newly developed discrete buffer stage uses four matched amplifier modules. Timing comes from two high-precision, low-jitter, ultra-low phase noise clock modules. Power transformer capacity is 50% higher than in the earlier D-06u, and each circuit section has its own regulator block. MQA decoding covers the disc and the main digital inputs, and a three-colour LED shows Studio in blue, Authentic in green and Renderer in magenta.
Pairing
A choice of RCA and XLR analogue outputs lets the player feed a preamplifier or integrated amplifier through balanced or single-ended connections, and the coaxial and optical outputs can pass data to a separate DAC. An RD-29 remote and a power cable are supplied with the player, which runs on 230 V at 50 Hz or 115 V at 60 Hz depending on market. Luxman also offered the model as the D-07X Black Edition CENTENNIAL, and the same BD34301EKV converter pair appears in the standalone DA-07X, which adds an AES/EBU input and weighs 12.8 kg.
Alternatives
The Luxman D-03X is a CD-only player in the same width with dual Texas Instruments PCM1795 converters and USB input to 384 kHz.
