The D-N150 belongs to the NeoClassico II series, a small-format CD player from the Japanese brand Luxman, that also works as a standalone DAC for external digital sources connected by coaxial, optical or USB. Luxman describes an A4 footprint of 210 x 297 mm, and the unit uses the same CD transport as the larger Luxman D-380.
Key specs that matter
A Texas Instruments PCM5102A chip performs digital-to-analogue conversion. Playable media are two-channel CD and CD-R. Coaxial and optical inputs accept S/PDIF signals from 32 to 192 kHz at 16, 20 or 24 bit, and the USB input accepts PCM from a computer at 32 to 192 kHz with up to 32 bit words. An optical output is also fitted. Analogue output is a single-ended 2.1 V at 300 ohm. Frequency response on CD spans 5 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.5 dB, and on the digital inputs 5 Hz to 50 kHz within 3 dB. Distortion stays at 0.005% and signal-to-noise at 110 dB on disc and on the digital inputs alike. Dynamic range is 98 dB for CD and 109 dB for the digital inputs, and channel separation is 102 dB in both cases. Coaxial input sensitivity is 0.2 to 0.5 V peak to peak and optical input level minus 14.5 to minus 21 dBm, while the optical output delivers minus 15 to minus 21 dBm. The player runs on 230 V at 50 Hz, draws 13 W, stands 98 mm high and 222 mm deep including rear terminals, and weighs 5.0 kg. Luxman lists operating conditions of 5 to 35 degrees C and 5 to 85% humidity without condensation.
Engineering and use context
Luxman chose the power transformer, filtering capacitors and Schottky barrier diodes individually and wires the unit with its own oxygen-free copper cable. The D-N150 was the first Luxman product to support Bulk Pet transfer over USB alongside conventional isochronous transfer, a method meant to lighten the processing load on the converter. The chassis is built from 5 mm thick aluminium with a blasted white finish, and the controls carry a hairline finish.
Pairing
The aluminium RD-27 remote supplied with the player also adjusts volume on the matching Luxman SQ-N150 valve integrated amplifier, which shares the NeoClassico II styling. With its USB input the player can also take files from a computer when no disc is loaded, and its optical socket can send the data stream to a recorder or another converter.
Alternatives
The Luxman D-03R is a full-width CD player with dual ROHM BD34352EKV converters, balanced XLR outputs and MQA decoding.
