The ZX-12 Sub is a 12-inch active subwoofer from Mission, made as the bass companion to the ZX Series loudspeakers and finished in a high-gloss paint to match them. Mission states that it uses the same technology as the QX-12 Sub while being dressed for the ZX line, and it is meant for both home theatre systems and two-channel music playback.

Key specs that matter

One 12-inch (300 mm) long-throw cone runs from a Class D amplifier with a rating of 300 W continuous and 450 W peak. Frequency response is 35 Hz to 120 Hz within 3 dB, and the variable crossover runs from 30 Hz to 150 Hz. Maximum output reaches 118 dB at 1 m, while signal-to-noise is at least 85 dB. Full output needs 200 mV at the line input. The cabinet is 400 mm wide, 420 mm high plus 58 mm of feet, and 450 mm deep plus a further 15 mm, and its net weight is 23 kg.

Engineering and use context

Mission uses a ported box here, and the reflex design lets the 12-inch driver produce more output near its lower limit than a sealed cabinet of the same size would. The amplifier is a custom balanced-drive Class D design, a topology that runs cool and keeps the heavy long-throw cone under control during large excursions. Its maximum output is 8 dB above the MS-10 and MS-200, which matters in larger rooms or with film soundtracks that carry heavy LFE content. The feet lift the cabinet off the floor. Because the crossover reaches so low, the unit can be limited to the bottom octave beneath full-range floorstanders. Rear controls provide crossover adjustment, level and phase inversion, and an auto on-off circuit powers the amplifier up on incoming audio and drops it to standby once playback has ended. Mission notes that its sensor reacts even to incoming signals of extremely low level, avoiding the need to reach behind the cabinet.

Pairing

The natural partners are the ZX Series speakers, such as the ZX-3, ZX-4 and ZX-5 floorstanders and the ZX-2 bookshelf model, whose gloss finish the subwoofer shares. For stereo systems the two RCA line inputs take the pre-out sockets of a stereo integrated, and a dedicated RCA LFE socket accepts the sub feed from an AV receiver. Line input impedance is 10 kohm and the LFE input is 5 kohm. Mission also provides output connections, so a second subwoofer or other equipment can be linked downstream.
