The MS-10 Sub is an active subwoofer from Mission, the British loudspeaker brand, and it belongs to the MS range of powered bass units intended for both home cinema and two-channel stereo systems. In Mission terms it is an active Dynamic-Drive IB design pairing a specially developed long-throw driver with a Class D amplifier of its own balanced-drive type. The model sits above the smaller MS-150 in the range and gives buyers a compact box with a relatively large amplifier.
Key specs that matter
A single 8-inch (200 mm) long-throw cone handles the bass, powered by a 150 W amplifier. The frequency response is 30 Hz to 160 Hz within 3 dB, with a crossover adjustable from 60 Hz up to 150 Hz. Mission quotes an average maximum output of 110 dB at 1 m and signal-to-noise of at least 75 dB. Line input sensitivity is 100 mV for full output. The cabinet is 410 mm wide, 280 mm high and 500 mm deep, and the bare unit weighs 7.5 kg, or 10 kg in its carton.
Engineering and use context
The long-throw design lets a modest cone move a larger volume of air, which is how a small cabinet reaches deep bass. Mission specifies a Class D amplifier because this type produces little heat and fits into a slim box without large heatsinks. Rear controls cover crossover frequency, output level and phase inversion, so the unit can be set to meet the lower limit of the satellite speakers and flipped in polarity if its output cancels against theirs at the listening seat. An automatic on-off circuit with signal sensing brings the subwoofer out of standby as soon as audio is detected and parks it again after the music ends, which avoids a separate power button routine. Its low mass makes the MS-10 easy to move between positions in a living room.
Pairing
Two connection routes are provided. A stereo line input with a pair of RCA sockets takes the left and right preamplifier outputs of a stereo amplifier, and there the variable crossover is used to blend with bookshelf speakers. A separate mono LFE input on one RCA socket accepts the sub pre-out from a surround receiver, where bass management inside the receiver sets the crossover point. Input impedance is 8 kohm on the line input and 5 kohm on the LFE input, both easy loads for any source. Small Mission bookshelf models such as the LX series are natural partners when the aim is to extend a compact stereo pair.
Alternatives
The Mission MS-150 Sub is a smaller unit in the same range, using an 8-inch driver with 70 W of amplification and a 40 Hz to 120 Hz response.
