The MS-150 is the smallest active subwoofer in the MS range from British brand Mission, a family that also includes the MS-200, MS-400 and MS-450 and is aimed at adding bass to both stereo and home cinema systems. Mission calls it a Dynamic-Drive IB active subwoofer system with one long-throw bass unit and an internal amplifier. It is built in China in a black finish, and in Hong Kong it was priced at HKD 2,580.

Key specs that matter

Mission fits an 8 inch or 200 mm long-throw cone, powered by a 70 W Class D amplifier. Mission quotes a response of 40 Hz to 120 Hz within 3 dB, with a variable crossover covering 40 Hz to 150 Hz. Average maximum output is 110 dB at 1 m. Line input sensitivity is 100 mV for full output, the stereo line input presents 10 kohm and the LFE input 5 kohm, while noise sits at least 75 dB below the signal. The cabinet measures 268 mm wide, 298 mm high plus 32 mm for the feet and 297 mm deep, and the unit weighs 7.5 kg net or 10 kg packed.

Engineering and use context

According to Mission, each MS model teams a purpose-built long-throw woofer with an ultra-fast balance-drive amplifier stage. Mission specifies a down-firing or forward-firing bass unit, an arrangement meant to improve coupling with the floor and spread low frequencies more evenly. Next to the crossover dial sit a volume knob and a 0 or 180 degree phase switch for blending with different main speakers, and an auto sense circuit handles automatic on and off switching. The unit has no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi receiver, so it always needs a cable run from the amplifier or processor. Inputs are limited to line level, with a pair of RCA sockets for a stereo feed and a separate mono RCA socket for the LFE channel of an AV processor. Speaker-level terminals are absent, so the source needs a preamp or subwoofer output.

Pairing

Given its modest cone size and its bass limit, the MS-150 suits small bookshelf or on-wall speakers whose own bass rolls off well above that point, rather than large towers that already reach into the 30 Hz region. In a compact 5.1 system it hooks up to the dedicated bass output on an AV receiver, and in a two-channel setup it takes a split signal from an amplifier that has preamp outputs.

Alternatives

The Mission MS-200 sits one rung higher in the MS family, with a 250 mm driver, a 120 W amplifier, a response reaching down to 35 Hz and a net weight of 13 kg.
