The MS-200 Sub is an active subwoofer in Mission's MS series, designed to add low bass to home cinema systems and to stereo setups built around smaller main speakers. The maker's own label for it is Dynamic-Drive IB active system, fitted with a specially developed long-throw bass driver and a fast balanced-drive Class D amplifier. Compared with the MS-10, the MS-200 moves to a larger 10-inch driver in a squarer, heavier cabinet, which trades some amplifier power for a bigger cone area.

Key specs that matter

Its 10-inch (250 mm) long-throw cone gets 120 W from a Class D amplifier. Its response is given as 35 Hz to 150 Hz within 3 dB, and the crossover control spans 40 Hz to 150 Hz. Maximum output is 110 dB at 1 m, with signal-to-noise quoted at 85 dB minimum. Full output is reached with 100 mV at the line input. The enclosure measures 333 mm wide, 363 mm high plus 32 mm of feet, and 366 mm deep, with a net weight of 13 kg and 16.5 kg packed.

Engineering and use context

The driver can be placed to fire either downward or forward, and Mission states that this choice exists to improve coupling with the room at low frequencies. A down-firing layout suits a corner or a spot beside a cabinet, while forward firing is better when the subwoofer sits inside open furniture. The feet raise the cabinet so a downward-facing cone has clearance above the floor. Front-to-back depth and width are close to equal, giving a near-cubic box that fits under side tables or next to a TV unit. Level, crossover frequency and phase switch sit on the rear panel, and an auto-sense circuit wakes the amplifier on detecting input and lets it fall back to standby once the input goes quiet. The solid mass keeps the unit stable on hard floors.

Pairing

For stereo use, the two RCA line inputs connect to the preamplifier outputs of an integrated amplifier, after which the crossover dial decides the frequency at which the MS-200 relieves the main pair. For surround systems, the single RCA LFE input connects to the sub out of a surround receiver or processor. Line input impedance is 10 kohm and the LFE input is 5 kohm. Mission positions the adjustable crossover, level and phase controls as the way to integrate the MS-200 with home cinema speakers and amplifiers, so it works with Mission bookshelf or floorstanding models and with other brands.
