The X15+ is part of the X+ range of Miller & Kreisel, known today as M&K Sound, a line that comprises the X10+, X12+ and X15+. It was the first M&K subwoofer to use 15-inch drivers, and it carries THX Dominus certification. M&K speakers have been used for sound production on films such as the Star Wars prequels, King Kong and The Incredibles, and the X+ series was developed for both music and cinema systems.
Key specs that matter
Two 15-inch extra-long-throw drivers with carbon fibre cones work in a push-pull sealed enclosure. The switch-mode amplifier, fed through an analogue input stage, produces 700 W RMS at 0.5 percent THD and 1,400 W peak. In-room response averages 16 to 200 Hz within 3 dB, with the -6 dB point at 20 Hz nearfield in both the THX and anechoic EQ modes. A fourth-order low-pass filter sweeps without steps between 40 and 125 Hz and can be bypassed or fixed at 80 Hz, and phase is adjustable from 0 to 180 degrees. RCA and XLR inputs and outputs are provided for both left and right. The satin black cabinet measures 83.3 x 51.5 x 46.0 cm and weighs 61.1 kg. Standby draw is 0.5 W, average consumption 120 W and maximum 800 W.
Engineering and use context
In the push-pull layout one driver fires from the front baffle and the second is mounted reversed in the base, so both cones are exposed to room air and the cabinet behaves like two subwoofers in one box. M&K says the arrangement cancels harmonic distortion and yields 6 dB more usable output. Each driver has a 75 mm aluminium voice coil on a Conex spider, a cast aluminium frame that helps shed heat, and CNC-machined aluminium shorting rings that M&K calls Distortion Killers, together with aluminium pole spacers. The cones use a sandwich structure with an internal bubble layer. The cabinet is built from 25 mm MDF with bracing, base venting was increased to reduce air turbulence, the front baffle is recessed and the grille attaches magnetically. Instead of a servo circuit, the amplifier relies on a Headroom Maximizer limiter with dynamic excursion control.
Pairing
Balanced XLR connections suit longer cable runs from an AV processor or stereo preamplifier, and the outputs can feed a second subwoofer. M&K designs the X+ series as the bass section of a satellite system and states that taking deep bass away from the main speakers typically halves the amplifier power they need for a given level.
Alternatives
The M&K Sound X12+ uses the same push-pull principle with two 12-inch drivers, 600 W RMS and THX Ultra certification in a 72.8 cm tall cabinet.
