The X10+ is the smallest of three subwoofers in the X+ Series from M&K Sound, a company based in Karlslunde, Denmark, which describes itself as the inventor of the satellite and subwoofer speaker combination. The series was announced as a major upgrade of the earlier X Series, reached the market in January 2022 and carried a US list price of USD 4,499 for this model. It holds THX Certified Select status.

Key specs that matter

Two 10-inch extra long throw drivers work in a sealed push-pull enclosure. The built-in amplifier has an analogue input stage and a switch mode output stage rated at 500 W RMS, with under 0.5 percent THD at 300 W into 4 ohms, and 1,000 W peak. M&K quotes 20 to 200 Hz as the average in-room response within 3 dB, with the THX and anechoic EQ modes both reaching 20 Hz at minus 6 dB measured nearfield. The cabinet is 64.7 cm high, 40.0 cm wide and 34.0 cm deep, weighs 40.1 kg net and comes in satin black.

Engineering and use context

Within this push-pull arrangement, one driver is mounted inverted relative to the other and the pair is wired out of phase, so their non-linearities cancel and the waveform stays symmetric. Because this reversed double driver arrangement is non-isobaric, both cones face room air, and M&K describes the result as two subwoofers in one cabinet. Compared with the previous generation, voice coils and magnets are 30 percent larger, linear excursion has increased and the cones are carbon fibre, developed for high strength and rigidity to cope with the extra power. The power amplifiers are ICE Class D designs built in Denmark. Walls and bracing use 25 mm MDF throughout, while added venting beneath the woofers reduces distortion caused by air turbulence. Dynamic control of cone excursion comes from a headroom limiter maximizer, and an auto power detect circuit switches the unit on and off. Standby draw is 0.5 W, with average consumption of 100 W and 600 W maximum.

Pairing

Line level connections for left and right, in and out, are provided as RCA and XLR pairs, so the X10+ can take a mono LFE feed from an AV processor or a two-channel signal from a preamplifier and pass it on to a second unit. Low pass filtering runs continuously between 40 and 125 Hz with a fourth order slope, can be bypassed, and offers a fixed 80 Hz setting equal to the THX reference crossover. Phase is continuously adjustable from 0 to 180 degrees. The package includes gloves, US and EU power cords and rubber feet.
