The Vi-Q15 is the 15 inch model of Velodyne Acoustics' VI-Q series of sealed powered subwoofers, which also contains a 10 inch VI-Q 10 and a 12 inch VI-Q 12. The series went up for pre-order on 4 August 2023, with the VI-Q 15 listed at EUR 2,490 against EUR 1,790 for the 10 inch and EUR 1,990 for the 12 inch version. In the UK the price is GBP 2,499. Finishes are flat matte black paint or matte white.

Key specs that matter

The front-firing 15 inch driver uses a carbon fibre membrane with a convex cone, twin ferrite magnets in the motor and a four-layer copper voice coil of 3 inch or 76 mm diameter. A Class D amplifier with a switching power supply is rated at 650 W RMS and 1200 W dynamic. Velodyne gives a response of 23 Hz to 180 Hz within 3 dB and 18 Hz to 220 Hz within 10 dB, and the low-pass crossover runs from 50 Hz to 180 Hz at 12 dB per octave. The cabinet is 48 cm wide, 48 cm high and 56 cm deep, with a net weight of 32 kg and 36 kg packed. Connections are gold-plated stereo and LFE RCA inputs and outputs, nickel-plated XLR input and output, a high-level input and a trigger input.

Engineering and use context

The closed box is built from 22 mm HDF with internal bracing, and the 50 mm front baffle is a 21-layer plywood board that carries the driver. The driver can travel up to 28 mm linearly. Its motor is ventilated in three places - beneath the spider, through the pole plate and through six rear vents behind the voice coil - which moves heat away from the coil during long excursions. The amplifier's power supply uses two 25 A MOSFET transistors rated at 650 V. Setup runs through the iWoofer app for iOS and Android, which offers a parametric equaliser of up to 25 bands, adjustment of gain, crossover, time delay and phase, presets and a subharmonic synthesiser function. A USB power output on the panel supplies Velodyne's optional wireless module. The warranty is two years as standard, and registration of the product adds a third year for the electronics and five years of cover for the cabinet.

Pairing

Balanced XLR and stereo RCA line connections take the output of a stereo preamplifier or the LFE channel of a surround processor, while an integrated amplifier without a sub output can feed the high-level terminals from its speaker posts.
