The SPL-X 10 is the smallest model in the SPL-X series of powered subwoofers from Velodyne Acoustics. The range currently runs through four sealed sizes - 10, 12, 15 and 18 inches - and this compact version uses a 10-inch driver in a closed cabinet. The series builds on DSP technology first used in the Velodyne MiniVee X and SC1500, with cabinet styling taken from the Digital Drive Plus line. The UK price is GBP 2,999 in gloss black.

Key specs that matter

Its onboard Class D power stage delivers 1,000 W RMS, with 1,500 W given as the peak figure. Velodyne quotes response of 28 Hz to 250 Hz within plus or minus 3 dB and 18 Hz to 300 Hz within plus or minus 10 dB. Crossover frequency on the low-pass section runs from 30 Hz to 200 Hz with slopes of 12, 24, 36 or 48 dB per octave, and a delay adjustable from 0 to 500 ms lets the output be aligned in time with the main speakers. Inputs cover stereo and LFE on RCA and on XLR, plus a high-level stereo connection for amplifiers without a preamp output, while RCA and XLR output sockets relay the signal onward. The enclosure measures 360 mm wide, 340 mm high and 440 mm deep, and weighs 30 kg on its own or 33 kg when boxed for transport.

Engineering and use context

The 10-inch unit has a carbon fibre cone driven by a four-layer 76 mm voice coil and a triple ferrite magnet system. A dual-spider suspension keeps the cone centred at long excursion, and the basket has three ventilation channels. The cabinet is made of HDF in a closed, reinforced construction with no port, and the whole box occupies less than 0.06 cubic metres. A 6-band parametric equaliser, stored presets and app control of volume, crossover, phase and EQ are provided. The power switch offers Auto, Trigger and On modes, the auto power-on sensitivity is adjustable, and the mains input accepts 115 V to 230 V. A black fabric grille on an MDF frame covers the driver.

Pairing

Because the balanced XLR connections carry both stereo and LFE signals, the SPL-X 10 can be wired to the LFE socket of an AV processor or surround amplifier, or run from a stereo preamplifier with the internal filter doing the crossover work. The high-level input allows use with integrated amplifiers that lack a line-level output, and the pass-through outputs make it possible to chain a second subwoofer.
