The MicroVee X is a compact powered subwoofer from Velodyne Acoustics that follows the earlier MicroVee and is built around an aluminium profile housing rather than a wooden box. It sits below the MiniVee X in the brand's small-cabinet range and targets systems where floor or shelf space is tight. Compared with the previous generation, the X version is specified as 15 percent louder across its frequency range.

Key specs that matter

One 6.5 inch forward-firing active driver works together with two passive radiators of the same 6.5 inch size. The amplifier is a Class AB design rated at 300 W RMS and 800 W dynamic. Response is given as 32 Hz to 180 Hz within 3 dB and 18 Hz to 300 Hz overall. The low-pass filter covers 40 Hz to 200 Hz at 12 dB per octave, with phase adjustable from 0 to 180 degrees. The cube-like enclosure is 23 cm wide, 23 cm high and 25 cm deep, weighs about 9 kg, or 11 kg in its carton, and is offered in black or white.

Engineering and use context

Both passive radiators sit on the flanks of the housing and are driven by the air pressure the active cone builds inside the sealed volume, and they add low-frequency output without any port opening. Driving the active unit is a dual ferrite magnet motor with a four-layer 52 mm voice coil. Velodyne fits its Digital Drive Control System, DDCS, which keeps cone movement linear and, by the company's figures, cuts distortion to one sixth of the values measured on comparable subwoofers. The aluminium shell has a corrugated, deliberately over-built profile. A remote handset adjusts volume, crossover point and phase, and it communicates with an infrared receiver eye on a 3 m cable, so the sub itself can sit out of sight behind furniture. In auto mode the amplifier wakes as soon as music or film audio reaches an input and returns to standby after it disappears.

Pairing

Inputs are a gold-plated stereo RCA line input, an LFE input with bypass and a nickel-plated speaker-level connection, and a gold-plated RCA output carries the LFE signal onward. That set allows connection to an AV receiver sub output, a stereo preamplifier, or the loudspeaker outputs of a stereo amp. The high upper filter limit gives enough overlap for small satellites and desktop monitors whose own drivers stop well above the sub range.
