The Varro RS700-SB is the 12-inch member of the ELAC Reference series, the middle tier of the Varro subwoofers launched in March 2023. It has a bigger driver and more amplifier power than the RS500, and its launch prices were USD 1,499.98 and EUR 1,499. The SB suffix refers to the satin black finish, the only colour offered. ELAC Americas covers it for one year in the United States and Canada.
Key specs that matter
Its 12-inch driver combines a HEX surround with an aluminium sandwich cone and works in a closed box. Power comes from a BASH stage rated at 700 W RMS into 4 ohm and 1,400 W peak. ELAC gives 17 to 150 Hz for anechoic conditions and 14 to 150 Hz in a room, plus a maximum SPL of 111 dB at 1 m. Its crossover can be placed anywhere from 40 to 150 Hz. It stands 437 mm tall, 416 mm wide and 418 mm deep and has a net weight of 25.3 kg. Standby power stays below 2 W.
Engineering and use context
Unlike the ported PS models, the RS700 relies on a sealed enclosure, where the air inside the box controls the cone and the cabinet can stay compact for the driver size. The voice coil is 2.5 inches in diameter, and the MDF cabinet has curved sides. At the rear are RCA line inputs with an LFE socket, speaker level terminals, a 12 V trigger input, Ethernet for integration with third-party control systems, a USB port for loading firmware and a pairing button for the built-in AirX2 wireless receiver. One AirX2 transmitter can serve up to three subwoofers. The ELAC Sub Control 3.0 app, running on iOS or Android over Bluetooth LE, adjusts crossover, phase, delay and presets and can manage several subwoofers together. Factory defaults are 75 percent volume, a 70 Hz low-pass with a 12 dB slope and the Music preset. A factory reset is made by holding the reset button for 10 to 15 seconds. The kit also contains a grille, a mains cord and four floor spikes meant for carpeted surfaces. The unit runs on 100 to 120 V or 220 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz with a T6.3A fuse, and a spare fuse sits in the holder below the mains socket.
Pairing
Its low extension and output level make the RS700 a match for floorstanding speakers or a home cinema in rooms beyond 20 m2. An AV receiver connects through one RCA lead, a preamp through its variable outputs, and an amplifier with no pre-outs through the speaker level inputs.
Alternatives
The ELAC Varro RS500 is the smaller Reference model, using a 10-inch driver with 500 W RMS in a 381 mm tall cabinet.
