The Defiance X15 is the largest model in Paradigm's Defiance subwoofer range, which the Canadian company launched in August 2018 in two series, the higher-performance X and the more affordable V. The X15 is built in Canada around a 15-inch driver and a high-power Class D amplifier, and is aimed at dedicated home cinemas and large two-channel rooms.

Key specs that matter

The X15 uses one 15-inch (381mm) front-firing driver with a carbon-loaded polypropylene cone and Paradigm's patented ART (Active Ridge Technology) surround, in a ported cabinet with a downward-firing, high-velocity, low-turbulence port. The Class D amplifier delivers 900W RMS and 1,800W dynamic peak. On-axis frequency response is 18Hz to 240Hz (+/-3dB), with low-frequency extension to 14Hz (DIN). The low-pass filter varies from 30Hz to 120Hz, and phase adjusts from 0 to 180 degrees. Inputs are one balanced XLR LFE, three RCA (left, right and LFE), two speaker-level inputs and a micro-USB port for firmware updates. The cabinet measures 62.6 x 59 x 62.6cm and weighs 41.7kg, in satin black.

Engineering and use context

The ART surround is overmolded onto the cone with ridges that let the driver travel further without the surround limiting its movement or deforming. Paradigm states that the extra excursion gives about 3dB more output with half the audible distortion compared with the same driver on a standard surround, and greater excursion lets a single driver move more air at the lowest frequencies. The carbon-loaded polypropylene cone adds stiffness to a material chosen for its internal damping. Firing the port downward leaves the front baffle to the flush-mounted driver alone, while the port's flared, high-velocity design reduces turbulence noise at high levels. Internal bracing stiffens the heavy cabinet against the pressure the 15-inch driver generates. The amplifier includes improved soft-clipping circuitry, which rounds off peaks instead of hard clipping if pushed beyond its limits, protecting the driver, and it switches on and off automatically with the input signal. A free Paradigm app controls level, filter and phase from the listening seat.

Pairing

The balanced XLR LFE input suits long cable runs from an AV processor, while RCA and speaker-level inputs connect stereo amplifiers with or without subwoofer outputs. The optional Defiance WT wireless kit removes the signal cable entirely. Its output suits large rooms and pairs well with Paradigm's Premier, Monitor SE and Persona speakers.
